Stocks are plummeting because they went up astronomically yesterday on news a merger may happen, but now that it hasn't been announced, they are going down, along with profit taking.

Both SIRI and XM always seem to go up late each day and then drop the following morning.

Sirius is down 7 cents... Not really PLUMMETING... Xm is down 41 cents, which isn't GREAT...

Gotta agree, the market is hoping for merger. The longer it doesn't happen, the more yesterday's gains will be sliding back.

As someone who wants aspects of both services, I'm excited by this possibility. I want MLB a lot, and it's the one thing I've been disappointed with on Sirius. However, it will lead to a higher cost for us, which isn't so great. I guess we'll see.

There is a great deal of confusion on this subject. A "merger" has little or to do with MLB being available on Sirius or NFL on XM. MLB isn't going to start showing up on Sirius or NFL on XM. These contracts were with XM and Sirius, respectively, and do not include providing the content for the other provider, combined or not.

Thumbs up A great company

If they do merge that would be about 13 million subscribers. If they raise their rate 1.00/month thats about 13 million more dollars per month!

And they would save money on competing with each other and could focus on the other industry competition.

I (think) I understand some of the excitement that the market might have for this deal, but I got no clue what current subscribers are going to get out of it. Why do we assume that we will get MLB on our existing radios? Where would it go? If there's a merger, does my radio automatically update to start getting XM channels? Is that technically possible, or does Mel have some sort of magic powers? If the merger means one services subscribers have to junk their equipment, and replace with new, would that temper some of the enthusiasm here? Won't lots of the saving come from needing less on-air talent (you don't need 2 sets of 70s DJ's for instance)? Won't lots of subscribers be disappointed in the reduced choices (Again, nobody should expect 2 70s channels on the merged service)?

As a dual-sub, I'm highly aware of how different the offerings really are, and I think we'd end up with fewer choices, not more. Having one place for all sports would be great, but it would cost too much (IMHO) in terms of musical variety.

edit:Crap, I agree with FlagRiot, errr, Crashed!

Thumbs up

Regarding the question that has come up a couple of times in this thread about compatibility of hardware between the two, here's a quote from BenDee's thread of Jan 1 of this year:

Quote:
"The radios use two different audio codecs, which are as different as CD and a cassette tape; Sirius uses an evolved version of PAC, while XM uses aacPlus, meaning that they would have to roll out new radios in order for people to receive all channels, or keep one codec and lose the other, which bring us to the next point:

-Which company’s radios will be the working ones? They could go with XM’s, due to the lower cost of producing them and the larger number of subscribers out there, but then that will add confusion to 6 million Sirius subscribers, who suddenly have to buy a new radio, making it confusing when it is Sirius buying XM. It would be easy to switch out a Sportster 4 or a Stratus becuase they would just send the sub a new radio to place in the universal dock, but what about people with installed tuner boxes, or OEM radios? There are millions of them out there, and the majority would have no idea how to switch it out, and probably have no idea where it is located either."

My current Honda has a couple of years left in her, and when I trade in/up I definitely want to stick with the brand, even if that means I would have to install Sirius after market instead of opting in OEM (XM) satrad, which would be much cleaner. I just can't live without Sirus! :P So, I am very curious and somewhat hopeful that a merger does happen if that means I can get my favorite Sirius stations as OEM in my Honda in '08 or '09 when I trade up.

This could be interesting cause that would mean LOTS more channels, but what about our devices? Would we have to buy new ones in order to pick up both Xm & Sirius?

We're already in the situation where if you want the full sirius service, you need a newer radio (Canadian channels) - and it's fairly well known that with the new sirius modulation we would need new radios to get more channels. basically I would guess they would simulcast the most popular content on "both" services and come out with dual chipset radios while they transition.

This is my biggest fear. I'm sure they are not going to screw over a bunch of loyal customers who just spent $350 for the Stiletto and another $140 in docks.

How would a merger affect XM Canada & SIRIUS Canada, both of which are managed completely seperately from their US counterpart??
