how is the new Maxima? What options/trim line do you have?

I have a 99 SE loaded except for heated seats. But it has a stick(a rarity in my type) so I am happy.

It's a great car, and I'm really happy with it. The 2004 is basically fully loaded in the base configuration. I've got the SL, which comes with leather, heated seats, dual-zone climate control, Xenon headlights, 320 watt Bose audio with 6-disc CD and cassette, and the SkyView roof. The only option I added was Sirius.

It's the first car I've had that actually turns heads when people see it. It's a big change for the Maxima, and a great new design. It's also a big change for me, since I've been driving a 93 Corolla for the last 10 years. After 190,000 miles in that car, I figure I deserve something nice.

The worst case I would imagine is there's a few months delay because Nissan didn't get the receivers built in time.

Nissan makes Infiniti, so I would think it is a plug-in install, same as I had on my G35. There is about 1-2 hours labor, and maybe that is why they are backing out. I think the Infiniti unit is made by Clarion, so if you compare your Bose radio with the one at Infiniti, I bet there is a match. The time consumption on prewired cars is the routing of the antenna thru the roof drip moldings.

Hmm...there were some issues with other Nissan/Infiniti cars, but if you are prewired, you should be OK I think. I would check out the 04 MAxima forum at http://www.freshalloy.com for more info.

Thanks for the tip, Cheerioboy. There was lots of great information over at FreshAlloy, including a link to someone who installed an Infiniti XM tuner on their Nissan Murano, which has the same computer display as the Maxima.

And, now that I've seen the display with the OEM satellite radio, I want it even more. The Maxima and Murano have a large computer display in the center of the dash, and can show the channel number, name, title, and artist all at once.

Here's a link to a picture of the display. I hope I can post one with Sirius soon :\

Well, I spoke to Nissan today. The first answer that they gave me was that satellite radio is only possible when the car is ordered from the factory with the satellite tuner pre-installed. The rep said that the cars are not otherwise wired for satellite. However, there's a sticker inside my car that says that it is wired for satellite. I looked for the sticker before I bought the car, since I didn't want to have any trouble with my Sirius installation. Here's the text of the sticker:
Quote:
This vehicle has been pre-wired by the manufacturer to accommodate later installation of an optional satellite radio receiver and antenna. Actual satellite signal reception requires activation and monthly subscription from an independent satellite radio transmission provider.
The Nissan rep is looking into this further, and will get back to me. The parts manager at the dealer is also working to find out the real story.

I've got my fingers crossed, but I have a few other options if it comes down to it. There's an Infiniti dealer in Texas that sells Nissan satellite tuners, though they're pricey and don't include installation. And, I could also tell the dealer to swap out my car for a new factory special-order (though I don't expect that to happen without a fight). We'll see what happens....

It sounds like they are just clueless to me. I can't imagine it saying it was prewired and it not be. I guess someone has to be the first and it might as well be you. You are blazing the trail for others to follow

Keep us posted as this situation progresses.

Go to a different dealership. These guys are not correct, the sat radio can be installed as a dealer-installed option.

qkslvr & G35Guy -

Were your G35's pre-wired for satellite? I'd like to verify that the wiring is there, but I'm not sure where to look.

John, you should be able to get Sat. You can try http://www.maxima.org - I used to go there when my 00 Max was new, but they are more geared towards the tuning crowd IMO. However, the site traffic is huge.

My G was not pre-wired. I had to install the wiring harness and the receiver...the pre-wired cars only need the receiver.

I come bearing bad news for you Nissan/Infinity folks. I got this off of the Fresh Alloy site under the Murano forum.....

*****The following is quoted from an Infiniti FACTORY Accessory Bulletin (dated: 7/29/2003)

"Effective 7/29/03, Infiniti will introduce a limited time program to address dealer installation of SR (satellite radio) in some non-pre-wired G35 Sedan, G35 Coupe, M45 and Q45 vehicles. Infiniti presently has a limited number of SR wiring harnesses, intended to provide dealer support in assisting specific customers who purchased a non-pre-wired version of the aforementioned models, and had wanted the SR option installed at the time of purchase. Beginning July 29,2003, Infiniti will make this limited number of SR harnesses available on a restricted basis for a 90-day period to support such customer customer purchase of SR. While not restricted to just them, it is believed most customers who might want such an installation made their request known at or near the time they purchased their vehicle. As of this writing, this program does not apply to the MY03 I35. When this program becomes available for the I35, a similar bulletin wil be distributed.

Installation of SR in these vehicles is lengthy and complex. Care is required to ensure a proper installation, and to avoid dealer damage to the customer's vehicle. For this reason, please ensure that your technicians carefully follow all Installation Instructions..."

Wiring Harness Part#s

B8377-5Y710 - G35 SEDAN & COUPE M.S.R.P. $57.00 (+tax)
B8377-CR000 - M45 & Q45 M.S.R.P. $93.00 (+tax)

SUGGESTED LABOR HOURS

ALL vehicles - 4.0 hours (your dealer may charge MORE)

PROGRAM PERIOD

NNA (Nissan North America) will ensure limited restricted parts availability of the harness between 7/29/03 and 10/30/03. NNA cannot assure adequate parts availability after 12:00 PST on 10/30/03. Therefore, dealers are advised and very strongly encoraged to resolve their outstanding customer issues related to SR availability in their retailed non pre-wired vehicle prior to that date.

Program Process

1. Customer notifies dealership they would like Satellite Radio.
2. Dealership validates vehicle based on the "Non Pre-Wired Serial Number" information table.
3. Dealership completes the Non Pre-Wired Vehicle - Installation Request from included with this bulletin, then faxes the form to NNA. (Only one request form per retailed vehicle)
4. NNA will process dealer request once per week. All requests received prior to 12:00 PST each Thursday will be input on Friday. NNA will place dealer order for the SR harness only. Dealer is responsible for ordering the Sat Radio Base Kit as well as the appropriate Antenna Wire Cover Kit when needed.
5. Dealer obtains a separate set of "Harness Only" Installation Instructions as well as a set of "SR Base Kit" Installation Instructions from (NNA).
6. Dealer conducts installation.

Antenna Appearance

The curreent technology of SR requires an additional antenna be added to the roof of the vehicle. The styling of this antenna is common to all Infiniti vehicles and each SAT RADIO BASE KIT includes one. The antenna dimensions are approsimately 1.5" High X 3" Wide X 4" Long and is has a 6" tail. In general, the antenna is similar to a computer mouse.

NOTE: This is not to be interpreted as a "FREE" satellite radio kit installation offer!! This is a "Customer Pay" Parts & Labor operation. This installation (depending of individual Dealer Labor Rates & Parts Pricing) can run as high as $1,000.00 (or more) *******

I don't know why Nissan/Infinity is preventing this sat radio solution from coming out. I lucked out and bought the wiring harness and tuner kit a few weeks ago for my Murano. It's installed and works great!

Good Luck!

Good Info Nachomama, and not necessarily bad either. It looks like they are trying to address the demand for SR installs but will only do so on a limited time basis. The newer cars will be pre-wired, so they won't have the need for the wiring harnesses in those vehicles.

I would recommend anyone that was planning on getting SR, to get it before it's too late! Of course if you don't want the factory install, you always have Kenwood and other aftermarket options.

I wouldn't take delivery of the vehicle without that radio! If that brings no result, call the Nissan district office. There's no excuse for the dealer not installing it.
