Default Help needed - adapting Audiovox box to use at home

Okay, I signed up for the free Sirius Backstage offer, and the Audiovox thing arrived on Wednesday. However, I don't spend that much time in my car, and would much rather have the thing installed at home instead (of course, my ultimate preference would be to have it swappable back and forth between car and home).

I have seen people on this forum mention in passing that they have created such setups, either adapting a car unit for the home or adapting it to be switched back and forth between car and home as they wish. However, I can't find where anyone has actually explained how they did it.

Can someone tell me how, or point me to a site that shows you how, to pull this off? Like I said, I'd prefer a back-and-forth setup, but if I have to make an either/or choice, I want this thing to be used at home.

Help ... please? :\ The box was activated yesterday, and now I'm paying $13/month to have a 7-pound cardboard box sit on the floor of my living room.

First off, you will need an AC to DC 12V power converter that can handle at least a 1 AMP load. RadioShack is notorious for selling these. I got one that looks like a big power brick with a cigarette lighter plug on the bottom. It was only about $18-20. You can get nicer ones that have screw terminals for $30+.

Then I took an old cigarette lighter plug from a radar detector that didn't work, cut the cable and wired it to the power cables on my Panasonic unit. The AudioVox is the same, so you just have to wire the Red AND Yellow cables to the positive, and black to the negative (ground). If you dont have an extra cig. lighter plug, RadioShack sells one that has screwdown terminals on the end instead of a cord.

For antenna placement, it is ideal to have your antenna in a Northwestern facing window (in WV), as you will get the best possible signal there. But if that is not possible, then you can try different locations in your home and see what works best. Just remember your trying to pick up the satellite that it North of Minnesota, and so high that its nearly above your house, just slightly to the North.
