Default 2002 BMW 330Ci Upgrade/install

My car was not originally Sirius ready....but the 2003's and up were.....
SO............. I bought a 2003 BMW "Business CD" head unit off Ebay after lots of research confirming the software codes.... (and much other info) for $367!!
I yanked the '02 radio and installed the '03. I picked up the BMW/Alpine Sirius factory tuner and antenna - installed everything and activated on line at sirius.com. Paid for on year in advance. Everything works great!!

I sold the '02 head unit on Ebay for $205, so my net cost was $162 for the sirius-ready head unit and about $239 for the receiver and $100 for the antenna. I bought the "install kit" that was a waste of $60, and not used.

I mounted the antenna on the rear parcel shelf, and have not had any problems (Except the way it looks):

The "Mouse on the rear deck" look is getting old, so I just picked up the slim Terk antenna and will be swapping that out soon:

After about a month, the SAT function stopps working. It says "Call 888.539.SIRIUS" When I call the operator says, I must have a new Toyota or BMW. I confirm this and he says, well "you get free activation, and the first 2 months free, so we had to reset your account to give you the two extra months". I'm getting my activation fee returned! Like this happens every day !

BTW - stereo is modified: JL 500/5 amp. MB Quart PSD 615's and a single Image Dynamics 12" sub:

Car:

I do listen to CD's every once in a while.....

That is SWEET!!! One of the best looking OEM's systems I've seen honestly, even though you did end up installing it yourself. Thank for posting!

Beautiful install! Sounds like you got a hell of a deal by tracking down the parts you wanted.

You can't beat that factory look.

Nice Install! Out of curiosity, how quickly does the text update when you switch streams? Also how long to hear sound after switching?

nice set up... and HOT CAR. Good luck with it, and nice work!!!

I wonder why Sirius mentioned toyota... I wonder if my headunit will eventually be sirius ready as well.

Please Please Please... I do not want toyota to be exclusive with XM.

Sound takes about a second, text is about 1 sec. more....

Q: Will this BMW/Alpine tuner work with Alpines?

Funny thing...are'nt most alpine head units XM????
It's a BMW piece only (I think).
Here's a pic of the tuner off another board:

BMW Alpine tuners/radios are different from aftermarket Alpine tuners/radios, so this will not work with aftermarket Alpine stereos.

F.Rizzo: Based on the effort and time you invested to make your E46 "Sirius Ready," you are a true Sirius Fanatic. I commend you on your accomplishment and welcome you to the BMW Sirius Club. I recommend you post your install on the various BMW forums because people are always asking how a retrofit can be done to pre MY2003 BMWs.

Here is a picture of what the Sirius display looks like in the 2003 5 series:

Regards....JL

Nice! Great install!

I guess I am in the stoneage with my '99, buy hey, I love my Streamer.

I will be interested to know how you put the new antenna on: Roof or Trunk.

Mine is on temporarily until I make up mind on what to do with it. I guess the one question I have, is if I mount on the roof and hide the wire in the moulding on the rear window, am I at risk of letting moisture/water into the seal?

Again, great install.

Mark

The black weather strip that runs around the seam between the glass and the metal of the car body is to hide and protect the windshield glass glue from UV. Installing the atenna wire in this seam sould be fine. If you pull back the seam you will see water and dirt get inside all the time.

F.Rizzo: How did you change the MID background from black to red?

Manco: The text data doesn't scroll like the H2A or SRS. WHen you change the stream, only the stream name is displayed. To display the artisit & title, you need to press the INF button. Each press of the button displays different information.

Hope this helps...JL

Default How do you change the channel

Can you specify a specific channel ..like 25

Is there a method to changing the station to specific one other than scrolling through all 100..using the BMW MID

Thanks for the props.
Uhhhh.....wuzza MID display??? My head unit is factory.
If you hold down the INF button fo 2 sec. the display says "SCROLL ON" and the display scrolls. You do have to push the INF button once to see the artist and again to see the song.

You can not go to a specific channel like 2+5=25, but you do have 18 presets, and everything is intergrated with the steering wheel controls, so if I'm close, I can arrow up/down to another channel.

I can't take full credit. Someone on bimmerfest.com gave me the idea:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37661

I was originally gonna spend over $650 for the radio....

BTW: I have a siemens S56 cell phone, and the car has intergrated bluetooth capability....seems like such a waste NOT to use the voice-activated, hands-free built-in stuff - doesn't it ????? Besides, the BT kit is only like $350!!! (practicing for the wife - whaddya think?)
