Default I can't hear the voices on my new surround sound system?

Before Xmas I went to BB and bought one of those cheap surround sound systems that was sitting in a box on a pallet in the middle of one of the isles. The brand is Koss, and it only cost $75ish (125ish before rebate).

I hooked it up and it worked okay for a few weeks with the audio from my TV, SIRIUS, DVD, and it has a built in AM/FM Radio. I also learned that the surround sound really only seems to work when the TV program is broadcast in surround sound, and not all of them are. Also, FM Radio stations will only come out of 2 out of the 5 speakers.

Anyway, my big problem is when I play my DVD's, I can't hear the voices. The background sound and sound effects come out fine, but you can barely hear the actors talking.
Last week, I could hear the voices over the TV volume, but not the surround sound system. Last night, neither worked properly. I messed with the different sound modes and check wires and still nothing. Other than this I don't have any other problems with it. The input plugs in the back did go dead for a week, but they seem to work now.

So what gives with the DVD sound?
Did I just buy a cheapo piece of junk? I dont' think I can return it since it's well past 30days. I guess I can use the FM radio at work with my SIRIUS PNP and maybe use the speakers with another stereo I have.
Thanks for any advice.

Here is my speculation- Make sure all the speakers are connected and working. I think the voice is mixed on the center channel and your center speaker might be unplugged or blown. Thats just a place to start. Its also possible that the unit isn't playing out the center channel correctly.

Also, make sure the speakers are connected the right way. My system has color coded wires that match the back of the receiver (my dvd player in my case).

Wires are all colored for easy setup and they work. You can do a sound speaker check thing and it sends out a static sound signal to all 5 speakers and they are all working.
When I played the Matrix DVD the other night all 5 speakers were outputing sound. Just no voice. Usually the voice comes out of the center, left, and right channel speakers (not the two rear speakers).
I'll recheck tonight to see whats going on.

But the weird thing was the voice sound wasn't coming out of my normal built-in TV speakers. I can't figure that out, the RCA cables are fine.
Someone told me just to unplug it and restart it and sometimes that works.
It kind of sucks since my SIRIUS sounds so bad on it, since it uses the FM radio, I only get sound out of 2 speakers. I still have to use my old system that the buttons don't work right. You hit the Radio/Tuner button and it turns on the Video input/AUX. I'll just need to go buy one of those fancy tuners.
