Default Does StarMate have lower sound quality than other units?

Ahoy hoy,

I just got my first Sirius unit, a StarMate. Right now I have it hooked directly into my home stereo through the minijack, and the sound quality is not as good as I expected; it sounds simimlar to an MP3 encoded at about 80kbps. It's considerably worse than FM radio. The problem is not my stereo or cables, and I'm not using the FM modulator. Sat signal strength is at 100% (antenna mounted on roof).

A friend of mine showed me his XM radio a couple years ago and I remember that the sound quality on that was excellent, so I was expecting my Sirius to be at that level or better (since most of the recent reviews I read claim that Sirius has the better quality).

I've read a lot on the forums, and I've noticed that most of the people complaining about audio quality are using the StarMate, so I'm curious as to whether the StarMate has sub-par sound quality compared to some of the other units. Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks,
bort.

I found that in the case of the starmate the FM mod actully souned BETTER then the line in option. SQ was not good and the level was low. If you really want to use the line out option you should use a preamp that goes between the starmate and your stereo. Radio shack used to have a headphone amp that would have worked fine. I am unsure if it is still available .

norbert26, I seem to remember making that statement in a review that I did of the Streamer GT. I thought the FM Tran actually had better sound and was louder than the line-out.

I am not willing to say that overall the Starmate/Streamer GT don't sound as good as the other tuner cause I've really not compared them myself. But I do remember making the above comment.

I have a Starmate direct connected VIA FM cable, and XM Direct directly connect VIA RCA cables to my XM Ready HU. The FM modulation of the Starmate sounds just as good as the true direct connect of the XM unit..

I am also a little dumbfounded by the number of posts where people think the sound going through the FM modulator is poor. I have an Audiovox PNP2 at home via the av cables through a Harmon Kardon receiver and I like it almost as much as CD...very close. In my car I have the Calypso through the FM modulator and it works great. The only thing I would suggest is if you have a removable antenna to take it off. Helps very much in the liberal Northeast where we have so many crappy NPR type stations in the 80's on the dial.

I just got my Streamer GT Saturday, hooked it up and hid all the wires in about 15 minutes. I am not hard-wired into the radio, rather I use the built in FM Modulator and it sounds AWESOME. 1000 times better than normal FM radio. I was a little worried before I installed it having read all the negative posts on this board about FM modulator quality but it really is great! I love it and now look for any reason to get in the car and go somewhere
