Default Sound Quality on Sporster Replay in Car

I recently had a Sirius Sporster Replay added into my 96 Camry. I got
it professionally done from a place that has a lot of experience in
this. I'm not sure why, but the sound quality of my Sirius music is
about the same quality as regular FM radio. There's a lot of reasons
this could be happening, one of which is that it's supposed to sound
like that in a car... but to help narrow the variables I'll list some
things here...

1) It was installed at a very respectable location (and yes they can
make mistakes too)
2) The receiver unit is the Sirius Sporster Replay so it's not a cheap
unit.
3) The Sirius antenna is located on the top of the car so it should be
getting a good signal.
4) the FM frequency i'm using is not being used by any radio stations.
5) when I play a CD in my car the sound quality is very good; when I
play Sirius or play regular FM radio, the sound quality is
significantly lower
6) I dont hear any static on the Sirius radio, just diminished sound
quality.
7) I dont have an amp or subs or anything special in my car, just the
factory speakers (but they do sound real nice with cd's).

With all of that in mind, can someone please help me think of ways that
this might be happening? If everyones radio has this level of sound
quality let me know that too. Thanks.

-Matt

From your post it looks like you are using the wireless FM Transmitter to get the sound from your Sportster to your car stereo. The quality is about the same as regular FM radio because by using the FM transmitter instead of a direct connection, the signal is essentially the same as an FM radio station - hence the reduction in sound quality. I use the FM transmitter with a hardwired relay and I am very happy with the quality, but I understand that you can get improved quality with a direct "aux-in" connection, or better yet with a Sirius ready head unit.

I think if you are real particular about the quality you should get a home kit and connect line-level to your reciever and listen for a while, so you know what the "normal" quality is.
It is not-quite CD, but better (IMO) than typical MP3's. Anyway, its hard to know when someone complains about quality if they are super-critical or if there is a problem with the install.

MM, you are so right about the SIRIUS Wired FM Modulator Relay. I put one in my truck, and the thing works like a charm.

Do you think the SQ is better? When I installed mine, I felt that it was better.

Yes, I think the SQ is better. Especially since I move around so much. The FM transmitter just doesn't have the same sound as plugging it in directly.
