Default Los angeles dead spots?

I just hooked up a Sportster Replay in my car - The channels updated quickly, and I immediately had 3 bars of reception. I work in Santa Monica, and as I drove up PCH through a short tunnel, I of course lost reception - problem was, as soon as I got out of the tunnel, I lost signal completely (acquring signal is the message) and it doesn't regain signal anywhere up PCH, or over the canyon into the Valley (San Fernando Valley - Woodland Hills, Northridge, etc.).

When I drove into work this morning on the 405 FWY, I didn't get a signal until I returned to the Santa Monica area.

I moved the magnetic antenna to the inside of the metal roof, under the liner - don't know yet if it makes a difference - Around the Santa Monica area, it works great - Is there anything else I need to do in order to get constistent reception? Is there such thing as dead spots or dead areas? I understand that certain structures will interfere with reception, but a whole city? Please help!

The antenna should be on the roof of the car. The antenna needs to see the sky.

Is it normal that I would get perfect reception in certain places, and none at all elsewhere? I'm not talking about inside, I'm saying driving around town - is that the kind of behavior that moving the antenna outside the car will solve?

The instructions don't specify putting the antenna outside. Don't mean to be annoying, but I'm just curious. Not so easy running the antenna outside, especially if it won't change anything...

Thanks for help - I do appreciate any advice you may have...

Try temporarily having the antenna on the roof for a day or so and see how it goes.

Then if you notice a difference, you can hide the wires, that's the fun part.

Jacklad, the reason you get reception in some areas and not in others is because you are receiving Sirius via a land repeater. As soon as you move out of the repeaters coverage area you lose the signal. Why? Because you MUST have your antenna outside of your vehicle so that it can "see" the satellites for reception in between the repeaters. Unlike the repeater signal, the satellite signal is not powerful enough to penetrate the roof of your vehicle. Your antenna doesn't have to necessarily be on the roof, but it must be somewhere outside the vehicle.

I drive the 405 through the Sherman Oaks area frequently. I have never had any problems picking up the signal. The only problem area I have is in the Burbank area. I hope Sirius puts up a repeater to serve this area. All other areas of LA come in great. Your antenna should be on the roof of your car for best reception

Thanks for heads up - I actually ran the magnet mount out the window on the way to work today and I never lost signal - now, as they say, comes the fun part of running the thing for real -

Thanks to all for your insight - the service is very, very, cool - Happy Birthday to me!

I think the bottom line is experiment! I get great reception in my car in La, I will loose the signal under huge parking garage's though. The home reception is an area where I hope Sirius will address with new technology.

Ditto; I have had temporary LOS on the 134 in Glendale a couple of times. That high cliff is a PITA.

Never had much of a problem with Sirius on the 134. XM on the other hand drops constantly. The tall building by the freeway must block their signal. I dont have XM in my car anymore.

I recently drove down the 405 (on Dec 23rd) and only lost the signal for about 5 to 10 seconds in two different locations. I have my antenna on the roof of my SUV.

However, I did notice that when I got off the 405 on Wilshire and headed West for a few blocks that I completely lost the signal. After I got past that memorial and headed towards the fatburger/mcDonalds/Jamba Juice I had no signal at all. But when I got back on the 405, everything was great.

Odd.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best FM frequency to use in the LA (Westside) area?

I've been using 95.1 in and around the Santa Monica area where I work - I actually live in Northridge and commute - this frequency seems to work well everywhere - I've been really surprised at the claritiy of the the FM transmitter - really clean and easy -

OK here's one.

I live in LA, my commute is from Echo Park through downtown to Santa Monica.

My antenna is on the roof and I am lucky to have reception half of the time. My satellite strength is usually 2-0 and Ter Strength is 3-0 usually. It never gets really high and it seems like it cuts out a lot.

I go through an aux input from my Starmate, so that's good.

What can I do to get better reception?

Then how come I have my antenna on the roof of my car and from Echo Park through to santa monica on the 110 and 10 freeways it cuts in and out the whole way. I feel like it sucks through all of LA?
