Default sportster replay display

I have just purchased a sportster. The display seems fine in a bright environmenthen I use it in the boombox, but when I use it in my car, especially when dark out or in my garage, the display starts out bright blue and I cannot make out the text information. In about 5 minutes, I'm able to read text. I have the display set to automatic. Is there any other setting that I need to play with, or is this the way it works, or should I exchange it? Thanks.

You lost me when you say "in about 5 minutes I'm able to read text" do you mean that it' remains bright or no?

OR is the screen a deep gray color you cannot read?

A few things here. Click the menu and then display and then hit display and hit manual. To the right is bright to the left is darker. This way it will not change automatically but stay in the display how you like it (bright or no).

Now I've found that with the sportsters, while they're supposed to be bright to see, many of them are a deep dark gray that's hard to read. The screen starts out as a bright, but then turns to a gray the longer you have it on. Turning to manual doesn't help as the color is a gray instead of bright blue.

I kept returning them until I got one that's bright blue.

Also, I notice that ESN numbers that start with 007 are the ones that usually are the deep gray (some in 006 also).

Try it, and if not return it by all means for a new one.

Because you have it on automatic the screen will constantly change brightness because as you are driving the surrounding lights change.
On you Sportster hit Menu>Display Settings>Dimming Control>Manual.
adjust it to the desired level then press select.

In about 5 min., the blue is darker and the black text is blacker.

Well, from the what it worth department the first 3 digits of my Sportster Replay are 005 and its does suffer some screen fade (Grayish as someone else calls it.) No big deal at night since the display is still quite legible. However, in the daytime song titles and artist information are difficult to read if displayed in the smaller font. Usually takes about 15-20 minutes to reach gray-out.
