Default 2006 Toyota Tacoma / Sportster Replay / PIE Adapter

I just installed a TOY03-AUX adapter to use with my sportster replay. It works like a champ except for a few issues that I am having. I thought that I would ask around for suggestions / answers before I go and break something in the truck or spend a bunch of money on something that doesn't work.

1. I connected the aux adapter to the replay car receiver base in the truck with the stock rca adapter that I received with the home docking kit (rca to line out). I have noticed that I now get engine noise. Do I need to get some sort of audio rated rca cables to eliminate that? Try to re-route the cable from the adapter to the sat receiver? Try to position the adapter in a different place? Right now it is mounted directly behind the factory head unit, strapped to a big wad of wires that run back there. Toyota left a lot of room in that dash.

2. There is a humming noise that comes through the speakers as soon as I place the satellite receiver in the car base and use the cigarette adapter for power. When I unplug the cigarette adapter, the hum goes away. Essentially, as soon as power is applied through the cigarette adapter to the sat receiver, I get the humming noise. I have not tried an alternate power source yet (drag out the extension cord to plug it in to the house, etc.). Would hard wiring do the trick and eliminate the noise?

Do I just need to get a line noise filter? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest a ground loop isolator. You can get them at Radio Shack.

I too had engine noise and humming problems that I was able to eventually solve. I also use a PIE aux input adapter (these things are fantastic once the noise problems are solved).

Here's what worked for me:

1) Use shielded audio cables. I originally used one that wasn't shielded, and when I replaced it the spark plug noise when away.

2) I got rid of the hum by correcting something that I did wrong. I grounded the third wire in the audio cable (normally a 'turn on' signal for something like an amplifier) to so chassis metal near the radio (thinking that grounding things is a good idea). I also grounded the extra wire that was on my PIE adapter to the same place. I guess the chassis metal doesn't make a good audio ground. Once I disconnected those grounds, the hum was gone. Nirvana ensued!

In summary:

Use a good audio cable, and only rely on the grounds provided on the PIE connector.

Let's us know how things work out.

Thanks for the tips. I am gonna give both of them a try this weekend. I found a heavy duty looking ground loop isolator at I am also going to pick up some shielded RCA cables. I'll let you know.
