Default Display problems with Sportster Replay

I have had my Sportster Replay radio since Christmas, and I love it.

The display on my radio has just started acting up. The background display light is working sporadically, it comes on and goes off randomly. When it is off, I can only see the display if the ambient light is right, and if it is too dark in the car, I can't see anything.

Can anybody help me with this problem?
Has it happened to anybody else?
Can it be fixed?
Should I contact customer services?

Thanks for the advice.

If you are still within your 30 days purchase period you can indeed get an RMA and have Crutchfield exchange it for you. If you are beyond your 30 day purchase period, you would need to contact Directed about doing a warranty repair, which generally means they just swap it out for a refurbished unit.

Trust me you didn't get a brand new unit, under the warranty they only give refurbished ones. Call Sirius and ask. Under warranty they do not give new units. Look on the back of the unit at the PSN #. The first four digits. What are they? The first two are the year the next are the month it was made.

Bad screens and buttons going (lights) are a major problem for units sold in the late fall Christmas time of 2005. The new batch that were made in January 2006 on seem to be good.

Well you're lucky and the first I've ever heard of. Just ask Sirius and they'll tell you you get a refurbished one and ask on the board here. It sounds like there is something else going on that you got a new unit? The timeline or where you work perhaps

Indeed that is the policy that when they do a warranty exchange you get a refurb. It could be they were out of refubs and was forced to use a new one. But we see too, too many warranty exchanges to know that the normal practice isn't to send NEW ones.

I still say if you are within your 30 days of purchase, then you send it back to Crutchfield. Let them deal with sending it where they need too, but the consumer shouldn't have to deal with a warranty while in there first 30 days.

If that's the case that it was returned to Sirius within 30 days then they may have sent a new one.

However I do know that when they run out of refurbished ones Sirius does NOT sent out new ones. They just wait until Refurbs come in. This was evident in the early winter months when people were posting here on long waits on returns of refurbished ones.

Something was wrong with that batch that was made in the late fall of 2006 as that's when there were a lot of complaints of screen problems and buttons burning out.

Well, As to the later ones not having trouble..... 33 days after I bought my brand new sportster... 6/12/2006 the display started going dark.... So I googled "Sirius sportster display light" and Gooogle sent me to this page.....

After reading all your information: the number on the unit is 0604, so it seems that the April 2006 ones have issues too .... and yes, if I bang it right - it lights back up.. but then if i hit a bump with the car... it goes dark again

And, since best Buy says they have the 30 day return, it's like a time bomb It was Just waiting for the 30 days to be up (7/15/2006) to break

I did take the Extended Warranty, so I'll check at the store to see what can be done, but get this .... They may require everything back in the original packaging.... I might have to take the antenna back out of the car.. (01 Mustang) If they do... it will be better for me to buy a second antenna and return that with the unit to BB just to get the new (refurb??) unit... what a crok!!!! I'd rather buy one than take the car apart 2 more times .... once to remove the antenna then again to install the new one

Mine has started doing it also, I push it harder into the cradle and it seems to light up.

Yeah, locking it down seems to work, I'll have to keep an eye on it.. It seems to not happen as much when it's secured to the cradle..
