Default Strange antenna placement - Dodge Ram 2004 installation

I did the installation for my father of a Staremate Replay and we couldn't figure out where to put the antenna. Well my father came up with a solution that amazes me. He actually put the antenna behind the factory radio in the dash and it works! I thought these things had to have a direct line of site but this works. It has to go through the dash, two layers of plastic and god knows what else. I'll put up pictures once I take them of the whole install, it's very nice, discrete, and useable. Has anybody else put the antenna in the dash?

EDIT: PaintedAntenna, thanks for the help with the adapter for the fm modulator! I was amazed that you sent it next day for free, even if we were in the same city!

The Sirius signal goes through most types of plastic.. The antenna itself is plastic, isn't it FWIW, many people do put their antennas on top of the dash and get great reception. A few others do have them under the dash.

That's good the placement worked.. Being out of sight is neater and reduces the chance of theft. I'd like to try my antenna under the dash, but there's just NO room on any of my vehicles..... I look forward to seeing your pics...

I've got an 02 ram and I ran the antenna along the molding and out the back window and put it on the roof, a few inches up from the third brake light. Definitely put some pics up if you can, when I installed the wired fm mod in mine I noticed there is almost no room for anything behind the radio, I barely had enough room to squeeze the remaining wire, so I'm wondering where the placement of your father's antenna is.

I'm not sure if the dash is different but there is ample room behind this radio for two or three more fm mods. We even had room to hardwire the power into a wire harness. My father thought he got all of the options except for Sirius but there is an extra wiring harness so he must not have. I'm sorry I don't have the antenna highlighted but I don't have images software on this laptop and I'm too lazy to walk upstairs. The antenna is in the top right of the 'radio hole' where the black plastic is on a diagonal. When I get a picture taken of the whole setup I will post that as well. That should be later tonight, again, I'm too lazy to do it now.

I just assumed that it wouldn't work because people say they have trouble getting reception when it is placed ontop of the dash. I figured this many layers of plastic would cause a problem, I guess not.

are you getting satelite reception or a repeater. If it is a repeater, you might not get a signal once you get out of range. In repeater area around here, I can be in the elevator and get clear reception. Do you get good reception when you drive in all directions, or does it cut out (if you are facing away from the satelites) I would think the car body might block some signal.

It's all satellite, there isn't a repeater for about 30 miles, facing in the wrong direction, and it isn't working now. I took it on a 15 minute test drive with the meter showing and the lowest it got was a 3 and that was because we were under a bridge. Usually I get blocked out with it on the back part of my roof (Cherokee) because it is so far back so it's out of site. With it in the front like that it isn't out of site of the sky so you get reception. This is a bridge that I go under at least twice a day, stopped at the red-light, so I thin I'm going to try it in my jeep. I was surprised when it didn't drop out driving, which is why I posted it. My father drives 30 minutes to work (one way) and it has never dropped out. He placed the antenna about a week before I saw it. He still had the dash torn apart for that week, I bet people laughed when they looked in the truck.

That is the same place that they tell you to put the antenna for the GPS.
