Default Sportster2 - Trying to Use Car Kit in Home

I've read through several posts regarding how to use my Sportster 2 car kit inside my home. Unfortunately, I'm having no luck whatsoever finding an inverter/adapter, etc. that will work with my unit. I've tried a couple of different products from R.S. and they did not work.

I came close today with a "GE Universal AC Adapter and Battery Eliminator" that I got at Target. The unit powers up but can't locate the antenna. (I verified that the antenna is working fine by plugging it into the car cigarette lighter.)

Does anyone know of a specific product that will work?

Thanks.

Maybe an answer:

AC-to-DC 4-Amp Power Converter

Converts Household Power to 12-Volts DC to Power Your 12-Volt Products and Accessories

4 Amps of Maximum Power

Input 120 VAC 60 HZ, 0.9A

Output 12.5 VDC, 4 Amp Max

Using amperage that is over 4 Amps will damage unit and will negate manufacturer's and CET's warranty.

The unit states it can't locate the antenna, or it can't find a signal?

If it's a signal, you will need to move the antenna around unti a signal is found...

A part of the problem could also be that he may not be getting enough juice to the unit via the adapter. Otherwise, yes (sheepish) you should make sure the antenna has a clear view of the sky.

Thanks for replying.

Sorry, I obviously didn't do a good job explaining in my original post.

I verified that antenna placement is not the problem. I kept the antenna in the exact same place, but powered the unit from the cigarette lighter in my car (instead of the adapter in my house). Everything works fine when it is hooked up in the car...same antenna, same placement.

Ironically, I was able to get it working in the house using the adapter for about 10 minutes. Then I get the error. I can’t remember if it was “Antenna Not Detected” or “No Signal”. Either way, it must be a problem with the power source and not the antenna.

Sounds like you're not getting enough juice to the unit. Try my suggestion above--good luck!

I suspect the problem is with inadequate power. Most autos will put out 12.4 volts while not running. When running it's in the 13.8-14.0 volt area. Most mobile radios operate at their best at 13.8 volts. I could definitely see a heat problem with low voltage. Get you a good 13.8 volt dc power supply off ebay. You can easlily get one with the lighter plug. Just my two cents.....

Smile Figured it out!

I was able to get this working. Turns out, the Radio Shack adapter worked after all. They just gave me the incorrect plug the 1st time I went to the store.

Here is what is seeming to work after 2 days:
