Default Odd Signal Problem Today

New subscriber (2 weeks), and today while driving along my usual route to work, I experienced some cut-outs where I usually don't. Also, on my Sportster Replay's screen, where I usually have a solid 3 bars of signal (the main screen, not the antenna aiming screen), I only had 2 today, and that occassionally dropped to one, with signal dropouts.

Are there certain times of day in certain areas where satellite signal just isn't as good? I'm not within range of a terrestrial repeater for the most part (rarely if ever get a terrestrial signal), so I'm left to wonder if it was just satellite orbit-dependent?

Thanks to anyone who can offer some insight, and thanks for providing a nice forum.

Reception indeed can be satellite orbit dependent, coupled with your location and where the antenna is mounted. The Sirius satellites are always on the move. Not sure where you are located, but here are approximate times for some of the possible "low points" today:
0530am ET
130pm ET

These times will change by about 4 minutes each day, so a month from now the same positions will be about 2 hours earlier.

Where is your antenna mounted?

Antenna is mounted on the roof of my truck. I experienced the sporadic signal weakness between about 12-12:30pm today in southern New Jersey.

I usually get rock-solid reception, so for right now I'm just chalking it up to satellite orbit changes. Thanks, Homie.

I'd keep an eye and ear on it for a month or so and check at various times of the day. It's not out of the question that time of day would have also been affected. The times I posted above were for what would be the worst cross-over of the two satellites near the equator (west going south, east ascending but not yet active).

Signal dropping out really badly today in Los Angeles. I'm using a SIR-GM1 connected to the OEM radio, so there's no way to tell what the signal is doing. I will say though that I've always expreienced drouputs with Sirius. Although usually not as bad as I noticed today, I always have to hurry up and scoot under that overpass so as not to lose the stream for too long.

This is an issue that I almost never experienced with XM. While I love Sirius and prefer it over XM, I can't stand the dropouts and will have to put the XM unit back in if this persists. I hope there's something they can do to resolve this problem soon and that the thing today is just an isolated incident.

It was really bad again this morning. I'm going to use a different antenna on my way home from work and see if this helps. If it does not, I'm afraid I'll be seeing y'all later. I really prefer the Sirius programming over XM, so wish me luck.

I have been having signal issues since Monday. My antenna has been in the same positon for months now and I have been getting perfect reception . But now the reception is bad. Is anyone else having this issue in the southern California area?

Yeah, I travel between Rancho Cucamonga and Mid-Wilshire every day and I have also been having big problems since Monday. I tried a different antenna on the way home today and that didn't help. There are some areas (like closer to home) where it's not too bad. From what I can tell, anything east of the 605 isn't too bad, and anything west of the 605 is terrible. Don't evern think of going near Downtown L.A. and being able to listen to Sirius.

I suspect there's some kind of terrestrial interference involved, but I can't be sure. I called Sirius and they ween't any help. This would definitely be an issue for a level 2 or higher tech support person. I'm not sure how to escalate something like this so someone can dig a little deeper but it would seem that the situation warrants it.

I was in downtown LA yesterday around 4pm and it was very poor reception. I had that problem last week in Hollywood. As soon as I get to West LA, its good again.
BTW , is there a thread or website that tracks these outages?

I have always experienced drouputs in Downtown L.A., but they've been far worse this week. The problem also seems to cover a wider area around Downtown. I only used to experience problems on the 10 freeway just south of DTLA. Now I get really bad droupouts on the 60 & the 10 between the 605 and La Brea, respectively.

I don't know of a particular thread for reportng this kind of thing, no. If I get a chance over the next few days, I'll create a Google Earth KML file and post it here for anyone who wants to compare my expereces to their own.

I'm in the Marina Del Rey area, and have had horrible dropouts since monday.
moving the outside antenna seems to have no effect. Incredibly frustrating.

Well, I suspect this may be a terrestrial interference issue. I'm not sure what to do about it though. I mentioned TI to the dude on the phone today and he had no idea what it was. So, I'm not sure what I should do now. I'm fairly confident in my diagnosis, but can't imagine how I might get this info to someone who is in a position to do something about it.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.

Having terrible dropout problems today in and around Glendale, CA and northeast LA. I'm a new subscriber. So, it's not normally like this?

Thanks!

Nope, not usually that bad. I suggest calling once a day until it's fixed. Unless someone can suggest a more productive approach.
