Default adhesive on antenna tail, does it damage vehicle paint?

i was wondering if my reception would improve with my sir-jvc1 sirius tuner if i used that adhesive tail and moved my antenna to the center of my roof and more in the middle, than just off of the front winshield. will the adhesive mess up my vehicle paint? do you actually need to use the adhesive? i was thinking about sticking a piece of magnet to the adhesive, but didnt think it would stay.

It's 3M tape designed for that application. It should be fine. Just be sure to clean the paint well first. As far as moving it, I'm not sure how much difference it will make. Depends on the slope of your roof and geographical location among other things.

a lot of the current model antennas use magnets. as long as the magnet is strong enough, i would assume it's safe...

I think the OP is talking about the little cover for the first 6 inches of antenna cable, not the antenna itself.

The 3M adhesive is designed to not damage paint but with your antenna already on the roof moving it to the center probably won't give you any improvement. Are you transmitting the signal to an FM frequency? Are you having problems with drop outs or just poor reception?

i had a problem with the sir-jvc1 dropping the sirius signal. i just got rid of it and got the stilletto. now i dont have any drop outs and my antenna is in the same location on the roof of my car. i dont know why the jvc tuner was as bad as it was.

that tail does NOTHING ,my antenna is at the end of my roof and it looks stock and has NO TAIL ,works perfect as far as drop outs .
I was on 95 and met up with a sirius rep and he said "great job".This was wayyyyy before Nissan offered any xm or sirius.

Actually the theory behind the tail, besides protecting the coax, is that the tail causes you to mount the antenna 6-1/2" from the edge which improves the omnidirectionality of the received signal since it uses an effective ground plane around all of the base of the antenna itself. There are some very good technical articles referenced in other threads about this. It's a matter that can be measured, but that certainly doesn't mean the antenna won't work well without it. In some geographical areas, though, it could make some difference.

However, if you're getting a great signal with the antenna nearer the edge, that's great!
