Question Will I get FM quality? Yes or No?

Ok, I have a 45 minute commute each way to work. Of that 45 minutes I spend 90% of that time listing to either commercials or songs I don’t like. I’m lucky if I find 3-4 songs that I actually like. But when I do find a song I like I LOVE the FM sound quality coming out of my car stereo.

Here’s what I got:
Alpine 9830 (Sat Ready)
Alpine front and rear speakers
10’ Infinity sub
200 watt mono amp powering the sub

If I add the Sirius Sir-Alp1 tuner will I get FM sound quality on music stations? I don’t care about the talk, news, or even Howard as I’m already used to listening to AM talk radio. But I need at least FM sound quality in order for the switch to Sirius to be worth it (for me).

No question! I get better audio on a hardwired Plug & Play unit compared to FM broadcasts. I would say your audio quality and clarity would be in the middle range somewhere between the FM dial and playing a CD.

The only thing you don't get with satrad is the separation. I have an '06 Nissan Pathfinder with the 10 speaker Bose system. The SQ between Sirius and CDs is amazing! Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Sirius, but it is not CD quality. However, nothing comes close to the content you get with satrad.

I guess it's subjective.. People have different expectations.. But I find Sirus at least as good as FM. To me that's enough. I have no beef with the sound quality. I mainly like the content and it's great. For travelling you CAN'T beat having Sirius

Just one thing.. I find I have to tweak the bass and trebel controls a bit to get the right mix. The levels aren't quite the same as standard FM....

I never claimed it was CD quality (if you're refering to my post above), I stated that the sound that gnet158 should expect will be superior to that of FM and inferior to that of a CD. The audio that the OP will get is better than ours also because of the fact that he has a SIRIUS ready HU with a SIRIUS brain which helps seperation and plus if you are using a Plug & Play unit using the FM modulator (which I'm assuming you are) that's another major step down in quality.

Learjet35A,

Thanks for the detailed answer, that's all I'm looking for. At least FM sound quailty on the Sirius music stations. I was in Walmart this afternoon and demo(ed) an XM unit that actually sounded very good. Not that I'm intrested in XM but I figure they use similar station delivery methods. Now to find my SIR-APL1 in stock, it's not available anywhere (or anywhere I'd trust ordering).

xmsr & siri sound quality are two very different things.

if sq or music is important to you it would good thinking to consider looking at xmsr surely if you dont care about howard stenr.

You know, I thought about that after I posted. I will be going to a hard-wired set up after I purchase a starmate 3. I'm hoping to get better sound out of a hard-wired set-up and new receiver.

Hey loadfet17, you are going to notice a big difference, the new unit plus hardwiring will sound exceptionally better. I have had friends in my car when I used to use the modulator and was listening to Stern and they have said stuff like "it sounds just like he did on broadcast radio" and since the newer unit and the hardwire they now say stuff like "it sounds like Howard is actually in the car".

FlagRiot, the OP said he is buying SIRIUS to get away from commercials. XM has commercials on some music channels, SIRIUS has 100% commercial free music channels. Saying that he should toss out a SIRIUS ready HU and switch to the service you prefer is off the mark.

The sound quality is better than FM, no static, etc. After you hear the programming and content on Sirius, you will see it is really foolish to compare. You have to live with satellite radio for awhile to appreciate it's value.
