Default "Acquiring Signal" most of the time

I live in CT and bought a Sportster Replay a couple of weeks ago. I use the FM transmitter and have no static or interference at all but it cuts out and comes right back (acquiring signal) almost constantly and about 70 percent of the time it won't work at all - I just get the signal message the entire time I'm in the car. Same roads, same time of day, some days it works some days it doesn't. Does anyone know if hardwiring it helps this problems or does it only improve static?

I'd check your antenna cable from end to end. Sounds like there maybe a cut or really bad bend/pinch along the way. Hardwiring will only improve SQ.

Thanks. It's brand new but the extra wire is bunched behind the dash so I'll check it out. Sirius told me I need an fm adapter but that didn't make sense to me with regard to the signal. Glad I didn't pay to have it hardwired only to find it didn't fix the problem.

Unhappy Issues in Suburban Philly

Wow. I am speachless. To say I am also frustrated would be an understatement. Mid November was the last time I heard anything but static on my Starmate with the exception of 10 - 20 seconds of every other word cutting out. Got a new Sportster 4 for Christmas and figured my original problem was likely equipment related. NOT! Since I activated, which took 5 phone calls, I have nothing but major static. I was assured that as soon as my cloud cover cleared out I'd be hearing Sirius crystal clear. Well, that didn't happen either. Wrote emails, made phone calls and tried to research what I was doing wrong.....then I found this website. I guess I'm not crazy afterall. Just still frustrated. If I really wanted to burn my money I'd have done just that in the fireplace!

Does anybody know for sure if the repeaters are still down??

I'm outside the Atlanta perimeter and I have to say today was the worst day EVER. My Streamer GTR was on for 4 *hours* and I got, at maximum, 4 *minutes* of audio. OK, granted, thick cloud cover, but still, that's the worst performance ever.

I've got the same problem in Atlanta. I thought it was my radio (Kenwood Tuner for the car) going bad so I tried my PNP model in my car and drove in the areas where I was having the problem (Northern Atlanta between GA400-I85, Perimeter Mall area, and up GA-400 a bit).

I had no satellite signal and no terrestrial signal. After I got out of this area my sat signal went right up (no problems). It's like Northern Atlanta has some sort of anti-sat signal bubble. I wasn't blocked by trees or anything on the freeways.

It's pretty frustrating. Makes having Sirius pretty useless when you can't listen to it.

I'm am ITP Atlanta and on Saturday I got so damn pissed I ripped my Sirius deck out of my truck. Tell you the truth if you are looking to get Sirius DON'T do it! They have 4 birds in the sky and claim they need dozens of repeaters on the ground in major cities, are you kidding me? Lets just start tossing radio towers back up, oh wait that is what they are doing in essence..

This forum is a black hole that no one from Sirius ever looks at. Sirius customer service is a joke, they have no clue what is going on with the Sirius network. Maybe explains why the stock is a whooping 3 bucks a share..

Ok, I threw the home unit's antenna against the wall this weekend. It cracked it and the reception is actually better.

I live in Vegas and have been plagued periodically by bad reception. The home unit has terrible reception most of the time. The boombox I listen to all day at work has started to do something new. It goes to the pain in the butt aquiring signal for a while. Then there's a loud "click" like something changed and it comes back on. I like the stations and Howard at Sirius, but the reception I have never been happy w/ and got it in 2005.

That's the part I don't get. I thought the towers/repeaters were for inside city areas where you're view of the satellites could be blocked at anytime by buildings. That makes sense.

Where I was having problems (and where it has been happening for a while, now) has been out on the open road. On I285 or GA400, I shouldn't be concerned about the repeater signal at all. It should be all satellite at that point. I was getting nothing on sat and terr.

I turned on my XM Radio this weekend. I had been just subscribing to the XM Navtraffic for my GPS receiver. In driving around I didn't have any problems at all with XM. It just worked.

If this continues I my just switch over to XM full-time. It didn't sound as clear (a little muddied) but it could certainly have been because the GPS isn't primarily an audio component. Still sounds better than drop outs or no signal, though.

Default Southern California...Southbay to Orange County

I've been having problems for around the last week with dropouts, "aquiring signal" and "antenna" flashing on my screen. (I have a 2005 Prius with and integrated system) anyways the system has been flawless for the last year. As of this last week Friday (01-06-2007) I have had the above listed issues. However, over the weekend it Sirius worked fine. Tonight (Monday) driving home, (405 to 55) the same issues again.

On New Years weekend I drove from LA to PHX and had no problems what so ever, crystal clear the whole way.

I don't know maybe it's our weather out here...... global warming?

meh..

Angry "Antenna Not Detected" on Sportster Original

I've had Sirius satellite radio since June of 06. They took off the best radio station in our area so I really had no choice since there wasn't anything good to listen to anymore.

I've had the Sportster (NOT the Sportster 4, the regular one) for a while with no problems. In fact, I was impressed by its ability to receive signals with minimal dropouts, even when driving under overpasses and trees. I was also impressed by its ability to pick up a signal under some canopies, too, like at those Sonic drive-in restrauants. Especially since there has never been any terrestrial repeaters in this area.

So, for about a month now, I've noticed that my reception has become rather bad. Driving under trees is a bit of a problem now for it. Occasionally, whipping under an overpass at 80 MPH is enough to cause it to skip. Sometimes I have to wait a while for it to get a signal when starting up.

That was beginning to become a pain in the ass, but now its gotten worse. I turn on the radio now, and I get an "Antenna Not Detected" message. No amount of fanagling with the cable fixes the problem. I've unplugged and replugged the antenna, with no luck. I've tried undocking and redocking the radio, no luck. Unplugging and replugging power does no good either. I inspected several spots along the cable where I'd think it'd get nicked or cut, but it's still intact.

Today I turned it on, and wow, it fixed itself! I'm listening to a great song on the radio, and then... "Antenna Not Detected."

Any ideas as to what is wrong? I'm about to throw this thing out the window...

Oh, and does Sirius charge for customer support? I know some companies (like DirecTV) charge for help, so I'd like to know in advance before calling.

Thanks!

Default I feel your pain. Thought I was the only one.

First off I would like to say that we all have about a 10% chance of talking to someone with Sirius that has any idea what they are talking about and not just reading "if customer says _____ say ______"

I have had my Sportster Replay installed in my truck for a week and a half. I Hardwired the power supply, bought and used an FM direct converter, and installed my antenna in my 04 Dodge Ram. For a week this was great.

Starting today I was listening to Sirius when the station went out. I was unable to change stations, or go to category list. I turned the radio head off and it was the same. Called sirius and 40 minutes later got a guy that said he would send a signal to reactivate the subscription. He said it would take 30 secs to 5 minutes. Guess what didn't work.

Later Today. Ran to the store and low and behold the radio worked.......for about five miles. Then went out just like before. This time I tried the selector wheel and three digit numbers came up in the left column along with "?'s" and symbols vertical along the top line. I rebooted radio head and now I got a no signal. Called Sirius and after waiting (the waiting only got old because of how many times I had to call today. It wasn't all that bad considering) This guy says my Antenna is bad, and I need to call the warranty number to get a new one. More waiting, but I am satisfied. Must be the antenna, because I plug in extra antenna I bought so I can take my Sportster with me in the company cars and it worked fine.

Later Today. Have to run to store one more time and DAMN if the radio isn't working again.......for about 3 miles. Now I am thinking this can't be the antenna, how could the antenna be bad if it is receiving a signal right now and then went out. I called again. This telephone helper was the worst of the day, music in the background and sounded like she could care freakin less about my problem and couldn't wait to get me off the phone. She just wanted to say it was my antenna. I said that is fine if it is I have one on the way but PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY IT IS WORKING FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES IF THE ANTENNA IS BAD. I asked what happens if I get a new antenna and have the same problem. Her answer was she didn't believe I would have a the same problem and then put me on hold without a word. She came back and said if I had the same problem they could send me and FM modulator. I almost laughed at her and said you have no idea what you are talking about. Instead I asked her how an FM modulator will help my problem since I have one hooked up already. She couldn't answer. I asked her to explain what the FM modulator will do for me, because I could be wrong. Her answer was "Its like Raid to cockroaches" I said what? and she repeated herself and said it would clear everything up. I hung up the phone in disgust.

I then proceeded to install the new antenna but after pulling all the wire out I wanted to check it before I ripped the rubber wire cover off my roof I tried the antenna one more time......IT WORKED!! So I reran the wire and let it play for 15 minutes and it worked without a problem. In the end I have no idea what the problem is or if the radio will work tomorrow.

I pray Sirius people read these boards and the information will help them fix these problems.

Default I thought

My thought after reading this link and knowing people that have Sirius with no problems is it is a Receiver issue. I do not for one minute think this is an issue with everyones antenna. None of my friends have had any problems. Just me and all of you on this board. Class action wouldn't be a bad idea to get Sirius serious about figuring this problem out.

In my opinion, Sirius reception sucks. I am getting drop outs driving under leafless trees. Driving on the highway at 80 mph and going under a 2 lane road will also get me a drop out. Unless you live in the desert something is radically wrong with Sirius, any type of obstruction can kill the signal.

I did not know this, I have been a Directv customer since 1995 and have never paid for help.
