Anyone in the Tampa Bay area having sat reception issues? I've been getting crappy reception in my car for a week or so. The antenna is on the roof, so I should be getting a three bars. My wife is having issues in her car as well.

Two antennas...and two head units..still no reception..and Sirius refuses to admit to any reception issues here in Boston!

OK. It's not the reception in Tampa. I've got a bad antenna or cradle. Can an antenna go bad for no apparent reason?

I'll answer my own question & report that an antenna can go bad. I bought a new one & reception is excellent.

Default Siganl Dropouts

I found this page and decided to put in my observations. Over the last few weeks several times my wife would say that the Sirius broadcasting would stop (no sound). Then when I tried it, no problem. Just like the old routine of bringing the car in and the mechanic cannot find anything wrong with it. These were the times I was at work.

Then, last Saturday, while I was home, the receiver (a Kenwood Here2Anywhere) blanked out. After a lot of fussing I checked the signal strength indicator. Just one bar. I usually have three strong bars (antenna is mounted on the roof). More fiddling. Then I went on the roof to inspect the antenna. Looked OK (it is mounted in a plastic box for weather tightness). About an hour later the receiver came on and there were three bars. Yesterday I looked at the signal strength and it was alternating between one and two bars (but with no disruption of the music). Since last Saturday there has been no disruption of audio.

I am in the San Francisco Bay Area, latitude 37.5°, longitude 122.5°.

Solution is to have more repeaters on the ground with more power . Call em! Not sirius, sirius is not the bad guy here.

Bzzzttt, wrong. Sirius had installed repeaters where they weren't supposed to be located, so they agreed with the FCC to take them down. Indeed Sirius even went to the FCC and told them about what they had found out. Presumably they've filed applications to cover the correct location, and/or moved the wrong location to the licensed location. Call Sirius G&P999.

The FCC isnt a fan of sirius (ie howard) .. if you want a repeater in your area i'd reccomend a grassroots campaign with people in your area to get one installed..

Hi there,

I am so glad you brought up this issue. I live in Queens, NY and have been a Sirius subscriber since Dec. 2005. Everything was fine until a few weeks ago when I was experiencing dropouts. I tried everything, but the problem persisted. I called Sirius and the first tech support person told me it was probably the antenna. I called again and the next person told me it was the radio. I called a third time and they again said it was the antenna. I figured I would opt for buying a new antenna as it was a heck of alot cheaper than investing in a new radio. The model I have is a Tivoli Table Top and it is close to $300. I've been holding off in buying a new radio because I would be really ticked if the same thing happened after spending all that money. I am not convinced that it a radio issue. I am frustrated because I am addicted to Sirius and I really miss listening to Howard, etc. not to mention that I am missing out on something that I have paid for. My subscription expires in Dec. Anyway, do you think it could have something to do with sunspots or some atmospheric problem? I asked the reps at Sirius and they never really answered that question. I would be interested in hearing your opinion.

Thanks,
Cabernet (Sirius-less in New York)

Same here in Boston! I specifically sought out this forum because myself, my girlfriend, and my cousin are all having this issue. I think I have it worse than most, I get signal 50% of the time if that!!

Hell several times I've gone on roadtrips for 2-3hrs and didnt get signal the whole way....

This is absolutely ridiculous Sirius really needs to acknowledge this and do something before a class action suit is brought against them....

I'm already on my second reveiver in under 2 years there is no way I'm paying for more of these things and service when niether is working or lasting for long

I had something weird happen to me a few minutes ago.

I was listening to my roommates' original 'old school' Sportster through the stereo in the living room when out of the blue it started dropping out. After 10 minutes or so it was just plain flat out 'aquiring signal' with a periodic signal jump. The weird thing about this is the antenna is located in the window where I stuck it when the Houston repeater went down a month or so ago. That location has a prime continuous view of the northern sat, and regardless, I am bathed in a repeater signal, so it doesn't make sense. My first thought was the repeater was on the fritz. But I powered up my Stiletto and the signal was perfectly fine even with the built in antenna. So there I am standing right next to the Sportster and it's antenna that's showing 'acquiring signal', yet I have a perfect repeater fed signal on my Stiletto (Same channel too)! To make sure that a connection hadn't come loose I checked the antenna wire and it was fine. Now 15 minutes later the Sportster is working just fine with no dropouts. GO FIGURE!

This confirms what I've sort of always suspected. It's not the Sirius repeaters or sat signal, it's their lousy buggy equipment.

As I've always said, Sirius and their partners are their own worst enemy. Their equipment definately has a relatively high failure rate. My suggestion for most would be to get an XM antenna. It should work well and won't have nearly as many problems. Any problems you do end up having are probably due to your radio.

I get a signal 99% of the time I drive in Atlanta. Constant dropouts at home and work. Launch the new satellite already.

I live about 35 south of Boston. Until about a month ago I had 3 or 4 bar worth of reception in my Starmate 2. Now i barely get 1 bar, and much of the time, no reception at all. The antenna is new!

I'm sure the folks at Sirius are under strict orders to never discuss matters related to reception, whatever they are. So even if there is something with repeaters and the FCC, they don't want to lose subscribers, whether current or prospective. So deny, deny, deny is most certainly their order. But they are listening and watching. They know about these issues. Hopefully enough complaints will spur some action.
