Default Signal enhancer?

I was on the phone tonight with customer support, and they were talking about something that'll replace or add on to my existing antenna, take my incoming signal and strengthen it. Does anyone know what this is?

I have a boombox that I frequently move around my house, depending on where I am, so the option of hard-wiring something to the outside of my house does not exist.

Prior to 1-2 weeks ago, I used to be able to put my boombox ANYWHERE in the house and get a 100% strong signal from a repeater...Now, i'm struggling to get that, even in my 3rd floor bathroom with a huge window. I'm thinking that Sirius recently had to turn down the power of their repeaters due to the FCC ruling. Is this true?

If the radio got wet (it is in the bathroom with me during showers), it wouldn't work at all, right? So, that's not an issue.

But does anyone know anything about this "signal enhancer" and if it really does work?

And yeah, it'd be nice if RCA, Sony, Philips, or some other big-name electronics company could make up some Sirius radios, but it looks like we got the shaft with Directed, although I don't think that's the real issue here. (Who ever heard of these guys before they bought Sirius???)

There aren't any enhancers to my knowledge. The FCC issue had to do with the FM transmitters within the radios and nothing to do with the terrestrial repeaters. However, that's not to say that the repeater in your area may not be experiencing problems. Getting "wet" would ruin the radio, for sure. But you're taking about moisture from steam, right? Internal moisture could definitely cause problems. But if everything works OK when you take it outside (where it can get full satellite signal), then there probably isn't anything wrong with it. Sounds more like a repeater issue.

Right. The radio wouldn't have gotten "wet", but moisture from steam wouldn't hurt it, especially as it survived one winter (winter = hotter water = more steam), it would sure go through another one.

My radio (bought October 2005) had the older/"better" modulator. It still does, right? It's my understanding that nothing within my radio changed, just the FCC forced SIRIUS (and XM, too) to drastically weaken FM modulators in radios sold from that point onwards, right?

The weirdest thing? It now works fine, lights come on and everything. (If you look through my posts, you'll find that I have recurring issues with the lights.) It seems to have multiple personalities. Will it work fully? Will it work partially? Will it drive me insane and not work at all?

OK, now what you're saying sounds like an issue with the radio. Your original post just said that you weere having reception problems. Mositure from steam WILL DEFINITELY hurt it. If I were you I would keep it out the steamy bathroom. Since the problem seems to be intermittent, my guess is that steam is getting inside and condensing into water droplets and causing shorts. As the heat from the powered-on unit dries out the inside, it begins functioning properly, then you expose it to steam again and the cycle starts all over. It will also begin to rust out the intrenal components. Steam is water, and thus is not a friend to your eclectronics devices.

Damn, really? That would seem to make sense, especially as in the summer, I have the exhaust fan on, the water temp isn't as high, and the window might even be open. Seems to be a good hypothesis. I probably want to keep it out of the bathroom until the weather warms up and the water temp goes down.

I was using a AM/FM radio/tape/cd player for over 10 years, including in the bathroom with no real problem. It's life started to fade a little near the end, but by that time, I wasn't using it a lot anyway, other than to listen to Howard as I showered.

I guess I gotta use my FM radio in the bathroom and put my SIRIUS outside, if I want something in there. It'll suck though, cause I won't be able to change channels, unless I can think of some other option.

I might be able to put a towel over the radio to cover it...hmm...

Your best bet is to leave it out of the bathroom entirely, no matter what season. Use the FM transmitter option to a crappy radio that you don't care about. Do you really need to be changing the channel during the 10 minutes or so that you're in the shower? Besides, you shouldn't be touching the radio if you're in the shower in the first place. And if you put a towel over your Sirius radio you're likely to start a fire. They get pretty hot.

I actually have a $10 battery-powered shower radio that hangs in the shower and I tune it into my Sirius radio. Works well.

Yeah, I may have to

Oh well, if I need to change it, I can always use the remote.

(I don't actually use it IN the shower, it sits on a shelf in the bathroom, but same point.)
