Default iPod Interface with SIR-GM1/GM Monsoon

Has anyone installed an iPod interface with the SIR-GM1/stock Monsoon w/o XM? If so, what did you use and were you able to use the steering wheel controls with the iPod?

I had the SIR-GM1 installed in my 06 Grand Prix and it works great, but I'm starting to like my iPod better than the music selections currently being played, especially R&B, but I still like a fully functioning Sirius for the news and talk.

Default Any ideas???

I've check a couple of shops in my area and was told the only way I can add the Ipod is to use a wired FM modulator. I'd really hate to go this route, so if anyone has any ideas, PLEASE let me know.

Default Solution to Ipod with SIR-GM1

I’m posting this in case someone is in the same predicament as I was: Installing an Ipod interface with the SIR-GM1.

I wanted to install an Ipod interface with my 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix with the Monsoon system. I also have the aftermarket SIR-GM1 installed for Sirius. For the Ipod, I wanted a connection which allowed me to have some steering wheel function/interaction with the Ipod and I wanted the Ipod to have a power source and charge. If possible, I wanted the head unit to display artist/song etc. for the Ipod. I obviously wanted better sound than what comes through a wireless FM modulator.

For the Sirius, I wanted to maintain all previous functions, i.e., I didn’t want the Ipod connection to screw up my SIR-GM1 steering wheel functions, head unit display, etc.

I was first told it couldn’t be done, and my best bet was a hardwired FM modulator. I did some research and came up with the USA Spec Ipod Interface, PA11-GM. Here’s a link to their site: I ordered the unit from Crutchfield:

The site said it would only work with the 2005 Grand Prix but I knew there is no big difference between the late model Grand Prix, so that was not a problem. I’ve got to believe this will also work with any later GM Monsoon equipped vehicles with XM.

Everything was plug and play per the instructions. The problem came up with this being a SIR-GM1 rather than the stock XM unit. The way it works is that the Ipod “plays” through the XM1 channel and you have to clip a wire so there’s no overlap play with the Ipod and XM. With the SIR-GM1, the wires are not the same as the XM, so the installer didn’t know which wire to clip. Rather than risking screwing something up, he came up with a great solution of installing a discrete switch that cut the power to the SIR-GM1. Even though the power is cut, the head unit still maintains all of the Sirius information, i.e., presets, etc. Heads up to Competition Soundwerks in Grand Rapids!

The only other problem was that contrary to the specs, the artist/title/song is not displayed on the head unit, but the steering wheel controls allow you to scroll through titles, which is mainly what I wanted. All Ipod functions continue to work directly through the Ipod.

(If any ClubGP members see this, you might want to link it since I’ve read several threads on Ipod interfaces.)

Maybe you should throw your ipod in the trash, and get a Stiletto 100. Just a idea.
