Default Sportster Replay SP-R2 Display Failure Cause

****THIS WILL MORE THAN LIKELY VOID YOUR WARRANTEE****

****I will not repair any devices. For informational use only*****

PROBLEM: Flickering display / Buttons do not illuminate

If you are very careful with the dis-assembly of the plastic case of the Sportster Replay SP-R2, one can fix the flickering display by re-soldering the positive (A) and negative (K) terminals of the display to the main circuit board. During the manufacture of the device, the solder did not fully flow creating the electrical connection to the main PCB(cold solder joint). More than likely vibrations finally allowed the solder joint to fail.

The button backlighting is an individual LED surface mounted to the main PCB located directly behind the button itself. The cause of failure is LED degredation due to the lack of an elastomer coating on the LED die(chip). As the chip heats up, the die expands pushing on the plastic overmoulded carrier, thus cracking the LED die or braking the gold wire bond that makes the connection to the die and the PCB contact. The only solution would be to replace each of the LEDs with new ones.

Here are some photos:

Default Problems Removing the Case

Hi,

Can you briefly explain how to remove the case? I unscrewed the two accessible screws on the back. This loosens the rear part of the case. However, the top appears to still be anchored. I do not want to force it open and risk breaking it.

Thanks.

Default

Some of you are currently looking for this information, so I am bumping it to the top.

Maybe you can contact the original poster and have him type up a step-by-step instruction manual for all those having flickering backlight problems with their sportsters.

Default Sportster display problem fixed...

Thanks for the tip!

I disassembled the Sportster SP-R2, easily located the (x2) connections to the LCD backlight, touched them up with a very small bit of additional solder, and the flickering problem disappeared...

Repeated warning:

Small addition: ( I am not responsible for any damage done by following the suggestion below!!!)

After removing the (x2) screws from the rear of the Sportster, there are (x4) small inside projected locking tabs between the top and bottom halves of the case that are still holding the case together. (If you look very carefully at the photo above, you can see them. Enlarge the picture a bit...)

Place the unit face-up on a table with the side that had the (x2) screws towards you (bottom of the unit). There are (x2) of the inside tabs located on the opposite side (the top end side of the Sportster), and (x2) tabs located on the (x2) sides, located about 20% down from the top. Using a flat-blade screwriver, pry out slightly on the bottom half side of the case while pulling the (x2) halves of the case at the same time; it's not extremely easy, but don't force it!
