Default are all antennae equal?

hi...I had an audiovox sir-pnp3 installed and I just swapped it for a Starmate replay....I used the car antenna from the audiovox rather than uninstall the old antenna and install the one that came with the starmate.....and I am noticing static now which I never had before....I use the FM mod as my ford doesnt seem to have an aux input...is there that much difference among sirius antennae?

thanx

your static has nothing to do with your sirius antenna. with the sirius antenna you either have signal, or you don't (for the most part anyway). the static is caused by the FM transmitter in your new receiver. I am assuming that you bought it recently and that it's FM transmitter has been weakened by the FCC. Old receivers like your PnP3 had transmitters that were not complaint with FCC rules (they were too powerful) so Sirius and XM had to change their receivers to comply with the rules. all the new receivers have weak transmitters when compared to older ones. not much you can do to improve your situation if you continue to use the wireless transmitter. i would suggest searching for "static" on these forums and you'll get some ideas that could help you - but the good ones will require investing more time and money (ranging from a little to a lot).

That is from the radio's FM transmitter; the FCC, lobbied by the NAB(National Association of Broadcasters) forced Sirius and XM to lower the power of their FM transmitters because they broke the regulated limits by a good amount. Satellite radio is digital, so you shouldn't hear static, instead the signal 'drops out', rather than become staticy.

Best bet? Buy either a cassette adapter if you have a tape deck, or if you feel ok with removing the car radio out, you can install an FM Wired relay in the back of the radio. It will transmit the signal over the wire rather than through the air, and will come out much crisper. If you have an aftermarket HU, and most Ford vehicles, it should be fine; however, some Ford vehicles require an adapter for it to work(click the link for the list of vehicles that need it).
