Default Which wire is which?

Hey me and a buddy are trying to install sirius sporster. What wire is the ground wire and which one is the positive wire? The black one is positive or negative and what is the black one with white. We are installing in a Ford Expedition 2002. We are trying to get rid of cigarette lighter and directly install the reciever to the vehicle. Anybody got suggestions or a guide to help us out?

Someone may be able to answer you, I cannot. But I would not recommend hardwiring that way. You lose the built-in fuse, and any custom power work that the plug may be doing. I really think the best way to hide the power is to install an auxillary power supply (essentially a hidden, extra, cigarette lighter outlet), then plug the exsisting cord into that. The other advantage to this method is that you haven't destroyed any of your car kit if you need to return it for any reason. My $.02, YMMV.

What I did was I opened up my cig lighter plug and soldered 2 wires to the back of the circut board. The outer rings is the negative and the center pin is the positive. I then drilled a small hole to feed the 2 wires out of the cig lighter unit and hard wired it to my cars 12V ignition and ground. Works great.

I know I could have gone out to an electronics parts store and get me a female cig lighter socket but I just wanted my install done.

Just a quick observation...

Which model of Sportster?

If it's a Sportster 3 or Sporster 4, you can't wire it directly. They take 5 Volts. The power plugs for these units drop the voltage from 12 to 5.

The older Sportster and Sportster Replay do take 12 Volts and you can wire them directly.

Generally the wire with the white trace is postive, BUT I always double check using an ohm meter to make sure. If you don't have a meter, you can pick up a cheap one at Wal-Mart or Pep-Boys for under 10 bucks. It's a good investment.
