Default Roof Antenna safe?

Hey all,

Just got my radio installed yesterday. The guys who installed it did a fantastic job (kudos to AutoTrendz). But I'm not sure if I'm keen on the idea of having the antenna on the roof of my car. Seems to me like an invitation for vandals? Or am I just being paranoid? I know I'll get the best signal possible there...but what's stoping someone from yanking on the cord? Cutting the cord? etc...?

Any thoughts?

Is the wire visible? If so the installation ain't that clean.

I put my antenna in the center of the roof, right up against the window mldg, so the wire is completely covered, around the windshield and into the vehicle.

In over 2 years no one has ever messed with it, I seriously doubt people even notice it, or realize it is a magnetic piece if they did.

Well the top portion of the wire is visible...but that's just where the wire starts.

I drive a bright yellow car, and a black magnet on the roof sticks out. LOL

Safe paranoia.

Car vandals/thieves are creatures of habit. Every summer, just like where you live, we here have news stories about how cars were vandalized and radios, change, etc was stolen, or windows were busted out.

The thief will usually go around a neighborhood, checking to see if a car has its doors unlocked. If it is unlocked, well, you know the rest...

TIP ONE: Always lock your doors and roll your windows up all the way. If you are afraid of locking your keys inside, make a spare key and keep it in your wallet.

The thief may go looking into car windows as well, if they see loose change, a pretty radio, a purse/wallet (trust me, it happens, people actually leave all their identification, credit cards, etc in there at night), they will try the door. If you locked the doors, they may go as far as jacking with the locks, busting the window, etc.

TIP TWO: Avoid leaving keys, money/coins, radio face-plates, etc in your car.

You would be amazed how fast someone can come over to you car and steal stuff out of it without the right precausions. All criminals are looking for the "easy hit." The act of opening the door, swiping a few dollars in change or a radio can take only 30 to 60 seconds.

TIP THREE: If you can't avoid leaving loose change/Sirius radio receiver in your car, put a towel over it or something. If they don't see it BEFORE entering the car, they will probably walk away. Searching for something they don't already see in the dark takes time! Time is an enemy to them!

As for someone snipping your antenna cable...yeah, there is always a possibility, but it's the same as some snot nose kid coming around with a BB gun blasting your windows. There are more and more people with satellite radio now more than ever, so I wouldn't worry about being singled out.

Lots of people get away with installing their antennas on the dash. I have a car and a truck and both vehicles have dashboard antenna installations. Some have even installed them under the dash. There are a few threads on this forum discussing it.

I have no repeater in my area (I receive by satellite only) and I get perfectly acceptable reception. I do get dropouts under metal gas station awnings and overpasses.. But same goes for the roof mount.

Of course the roof is the best spot, but if the dash works just as well.. Why not

Snipping the antenna will render it useless and they won't be able to pull it out intact so vandalism is a possibility but theft of the antenna is unlikely. It does act as an indicator that there may be something more inside. Like was mentioned, keep things locked and valuables out of sight. If it is a PnP, try to hide it or take it with you if possible. I have a black beanie that i throw over my S50 to hide it and it does a decent job...

Correct me if I'm wrong but if someone steals your Sirius radio can't you just report it to Sirius and in turn the radio becomes a paper weight. So MOST thief's are not after satellite radio now on the other hand navigation units is a hot item.

I put my antenna on the roof but it's a black truck so you would have to be looking for it to really see it. I wish I would of tried the inside the vehicle thing as between car washes and the elements am sure it will have a short life span.

According to other posts on this forum, apparently Sirius does not mark them as stolen. Yes you can have it deactivated, but the thief, or his/her new customer, could reactivate it...

You are being overly suspicious. It's just new, and YOU notice it more. If anything, be proud, you now have a level of entertainment that the average, bored, stuck at a redlight motorist doesn't know yet. Even better than "ipod". I'm proud of my antenna. (it's been there for 3 years and nobody has messed with it) They do notice it though.

Really I didn't know that. That's kinda sad to hear.
