Default Hard wired power help

Hi there, I would liek some step by step help on how to hardwire power from my Sportser 4. One post mention a siple little do-dad from Autozone that I could splice onto to, but then i reead this.

If you plan on hard wiring the cig lighter plug, try soldering some wires to it, dont just clip off the plug and run those to 12V and ground. Some radios run off of 5V so, it can damage them.

So, what is the pro way to do this so I get power without using the cig lighter, but wont fry my Sportster?

And please, be clear/basic. i'm handy, but I've never tierd into the fuse box (if this is indeed what's needed).
