I had a Xact that lasted for 2 days, exchanged it and the second one lasted for 2 months. It was a discontinued unit and had purchased the extra warranty thru Circuit City so was able to get my money back and purchased a Starmate Replay 2 and have had it ever since. Have not had any problems with the Replay now for over 10months.

Now that was my experience, I have read here where others have had great experience with Xact so take what I said with a grain of salt. I have read many posts with bad experiences with the replay also. Now that I have muddied the water, if your buddy has had the radio for a while it is prob a good unit and enjoy.

I own an xact XTR7 (starmate clone), and had it for a year now, as of christmas. Still works great. used to be transferred between car and home, now resides in a xact boombox (I have two, both work great). All is still functioning perfectly, so if the price is right, go for it!

I have the xtr7 as well and it is by far my most reliable receiver. I use it in my boombox, plugged into my computer, and in my wifes van when Im driving it.

Xact is a POS. The headphones plug on the 1st one I had broke. I returned it. Got a new one, now it reboots for five minutes before it actually turns on (a common problem with xact, read the forum). Avoid it.

I've had my XTR7 for almost 2 years now with no major problems.

Thing about the XTR7 and the original Starmate clones is that they do have a problem with the power socket getting loose. I took mine apart and resoldered the connections with silver solder.

I am having antenna issues right now, but for a unit that has been used almost every day for at least 20 months, been used in my car, on my motorcycle and in the boombox I feel that I have gotten my money's worth plus+++... I've beaten up this unit pretty good over the past two years and it always functions. Even got caught in a rainstorm a few times with no ill effects. Little bugger is tough!!!

A few weeks ago, a guy in the Chicagoland area where I live advertised on Craigslist that he had two brand new in the package XTR7 full kits for sale. I picked them up for $50 each. This included the radio's, house kits and car kits in unopened packaging. I'm going to swap my current XTR7 over to one of the new ones this week due to my antenna issues I'm having. My 20 month unit has been a great unit and I'm sorry to retire it but the drop's are getting to me.

Reason for buying these two units instead of upgrading is that the XCT7 is easy to use on the motorcycle and I have the boombox in my garage that I don't want to replace and that these units are 12VDC which is great for the bike. Having the original strong FM transmitter is a big plus too...

Now - If someone is looking for a XTR8 Replay, last time I checked Walmart has them on clearance for $40 - $50 for the radio and car kit. The boombox is clearance for around $60 or so. Not bad...
