Post My Sirius Experience with different Recievers

January 10, 2007 Monterey Peninsula

Well its me again with another post about my Satellite Radio. I have currently a 92 Acura Integra. I got this car from my Brother in November when I gave his son and him my 95 Integra GSR.
Anyway my 95 Integra had Sirius Satellite in it and never once did I experience any problems whatsoever. The Reciever that was in my 95 Acura was made by Audiovox. Worked liked a charm.
Well when I got the 92 Acura I went out to my local Circuit City Store and purchased a new Sirius Reciever: It was called Stratus or something like that.
From day one I had nothing but problems with that particular model. I couldn't pick up anything. Well needless to say I took it back and got another Stratus model thinking maybe the other had been a Lemon. Well the same thing happend. Couldn't pickup anything thru FM.. Well I phoned Sirius Customer Service and the poor Bloke tried to help get the Stratus to work. No luck whatsoever. Well back to Circuit City I went. I then spoke with one of the Sales Staff at Circuit City and he talked me into upgrading to a better Sirius Reciever. (The Starmate 4) Well the first one didn't power on at all so I had to return it again to Circuit City and exchange it for another. Well the new one worked great and had awesome features and the sound quality couldn't have been better. Also the signal strengths couldn't have been better. It was perfect. Well this last Sunday I had the Starmate on in my Car and all of a sudden it stopped playing. All it did was display the Sirius logo. It would do nothing else. I phoned Sirius and their Tech. Support couldn't even help me out. Nothing would work. So again I was back to Circuit City. I returned the Starmate and this time a Manager talked me into the S50 from Sirius. He said that this particular model (S50) happens to be the best Sirius Unit sold by Circuit City. Don't know if that is true or not, but I purchased it anyway.
Well I have about 5 Sirius Antennas and tried one inside the Car on the rear pannel and it worked ok. A few Signal drops but not to bad. The other antenna is on my Trunk and has a perfect view of the sky. Lots of static and the stations aren't clear.
Sirius Customer Service says it maybe something with the weather in California and the posistion of the Satellite in Orbit. What do I know I am no Satellite Tech. Needless to say I haven't been to happy with the newer Recievers being made. I have a Homekit and Boombox made by Audiovox in my House with an outdoor Satellite Antenna. This Reciever works perfect and never ever has problems with signals or sound quality.
Those of you who read this article please respond and let me know of your experiences with your Recievers. I am curious to know if other people experience the same thing like I do with the S50, static and poor sound quality. The first 2 days I had the S50 it worked awesome. I don't know why all of a sudden the change in signal quality and sound quality. Thanks everyone here for your different comments and advise.

Static is usually associated with the FM transmitter. The FCC recently mandated that Sirius receivers drastically lower the power of the FM transmitters. I understand the difference is fairly dramatic.

Problems with sound quality that aren't the fault of the FM transmitter are usually due to the receiver.

I would recommend a wired connection for your vehicle. An FM relay that automatically cuts out the stereo antenna and patches the receiver's FM Transmitter directly to the stereo is fairly cheap, and installation is farily easy. Do a search for 'SAT-SWB' to learn more.

An Aux In adapter is slightly better (YMMV) but does cost quite a bit more. PIE makes model for many different car makers. Unfortunately, I doubt they go back to '92.

Good luck.

I think the antenna on your car went bad. Replace it with the one that worked pretty good from insdie the car and you should be all set. That one should work even better outside the car.
