Default My Starmate 4 just shut down and.........

now it will not power up again. Was driving home from work and it just shut down all by itself. The screen went off and then the rest of the unit slowly dimmed out.

I checked the power at the plug. It's putting out 5.3 volts. Nothing was warm or hot to touch. Didn't smell anything either.

Anybody else ever have this problem? Is my unit defective?

Congrats on being smart enough to check the voltage and having the foresight to own a multimeter. Smell is also a good check. However...

What you really checked was the unloaded voltage output. The power adapter might not work with a load. Also, check for 'ripple'. Some adapters are simply oscillators, stepped up or down with a transformer, then rectified and filtered. Set your multimeter for 'AC' (~) and make sure it doesn't read more than 200mV.

There are two other components you can suspect: the cradle and the receiver itself. They're a lot harder to check though. I would try the Starmate4 in a different cradle or dock. If it works normally, get a new vehicle kit.

Hey Capn Ramius...

It appears that the culprit is the cradle. The unit works fine when I put it in another cradle.

Any idea where I may be able to purchase just a cradle?
Thanks for your help!

The cradle should be covered under warranty. You might want to try that first.

If not, check online as semipenguin said. If you want it now, I would check anywhere local that sells SIRIUS stuff.

Default Crutchfield Rules!!!

I originally purchased my unit and accessories from Crutchfield.com. I told them that I had everything else installed but only needed a new cradle. They said they will ship me out a whole new car kit (overnight) and let me swap out what I need and then send it back to them... at no cost to me. They even suggested that I also swap out the power adapter since that's where a majority of the power issues are coming from.

I was impressed.

Thanks for everyones help!!

Final Update...

Turns out it was the power adapter. Even though it read 5.3v on the multimeter, it wouldn't power up the receiver. Don't know why.
But it's all good now!

Thanks everyone!

Congrats on being good to go!

Power adapters are a little more complicated than most people think. Luckily, they're fairly cheap.
