In one of my emails to Translight I asked if the signal would travel through walls, and he said it would and would work up to 100m. He also told me this write up was written for an XM deal he had. He shipped a large order so XM could mount these in buildings. Its just an assumption but Im guessing these things are very high powered for large complexes such as malls ect. Therefore the write up was intended for precautionary measures for large groups of people walking around. I dont think a family home would cause much interference.

For all those interested in buying one PM me so I can Get a count. Also include any questions you may have and I'll email Translight and get this all buttoned up.

Does it say anywhere how directional the antenna is. How wide of a area will it cover at say 25ft pointing down??

It dosnt really say that specifically. It says mount it at the highest point so it will cover more area. I would probably mount mine in the attic. Or on the ceiling in a closet.

Wonder if the opposite would apply as well. Mainly, mounting it in a basement and pointing it up?

Never thought of that. That would be a good question to ask.

Installation certainly looks easy enough. Anyone else have any concerns?

DAB, I tend to agree with you on this. $200 is a bit pricey, but only compared to the theoretical Directed repeater, and we've been down that road before. Also, I would have to say your purchasing conditions are exactly what I would have to have. If we can get him to agree, I'm in.

I looked over the specs. They aren't impressive. However, that's a good thing. Something with impressive specs would cost at least three times as much. Probably a lot more. There would also be a problem with meeting FCC guidelines. Finally, something with impressive specs would probably not be robust and durable.

vtec, I would say the higher you mount it, the broader the range. Assuming you don't have an extremely long cable run. It would be best to mount it somewhere geometrically centered between all the receivers, or at the center of the building if you plan to add more receivers later, but higher is better.

DaJ, I don't see a problem with that. Most omni-directional antenna patterns have a null spot at their center, and tend to conically radiate. So, if you want to put it in the basement, you'd want to put it at the lowest point (facing up, of course). I would also recommend placing it as I decribed above. Understand, though, that people walking between the indoor transmit antenna and the receiver will probably affect reception to some degree.

Blitz I am interested, but I think the purchasing condition is what would drive my decision. I am not real confortable giving my money to someone I do not know in hopes that they would order and send me one of these. If they guy is truly interested in selling. Perhaps if we could get 5 or 10 people interested he'd be willing to allow us to call in with our own credit cards to make a purchase at the special discounted rate and then ship them to us individually. I am certainly not interested in collecting funds and making a purchase then having to worry about shipping these out to individuals. If you can work something out with him then I think we can proceed to the next level. If his rate of $200 for a minimum of 5 holds then I am sure at least 5 of us could set a day to each call in with our orders to insure he gets the minimum of 5 ordered.

Too bad this guy wouldn't send one of these to one of the moderators here on the forum for us to test and report the results. I really think we could sell some of these for him, but he have to handle the direct sells himself. I'd be willing to do this at the $200 rate. He can't sell them if we are all unsure about them though.

I hear what you're saying DAB. For those that are interested please PM me so I can keep a good count. Then when everyone is in, I'll ask him about the ordering and shipping concerns.
The more people the better. Maybe we can get a bigger break if we can get 10 people.

DAB, you're one of the biggest early adopters I've ever 'met'! How can you do that if you're also not a hopeless optimist, too?

Admit it. Your wife told you you'd need the money for a divorce lawyer if you tried to order it.

Yeah, I'd like to think and hope they work as advertised.

Shhh... You never know who is reading these threads now.... no references to a wife. LOL

Maybe naive would have been a better word. Seriously, I find almost all electronics works like it's supposed to, if you understand it's limitations. (I would have to exclude things like Wii's that are gotten home and found to be the box filled with soiled socks, of course.) OTOH, products provided for evaluational purposes does serve a need, IMO.

Sorry, DAB. I was referring to a "hypothetical" wife.

i wish we could hear first hand from someone who already has one to tell us how well or not so well it works.

also, didn't i read somewhere that this guy claimed to have worked for sirius and decided to leave to pursue this product on his own? if so, why would he have it all labeled up with XM and sell it to XM customers before Sirius?

I think that's unlikely. This sounds like a one-man operation and a niche product. I doubt he's sold very many.

Yeah, you might have read that in the OP. (Post #1, this thread.) It was subsequently explained that he tried to market it to XM for their sales, but it works with Sirius.

He did work for Sirius go to the website www.translightinc.com
Its labeled up with XM because the write was for them. He sold 5000 units to XM. I read that on Orbitcast. I'd think they made sure they worked before they bought 5000.
