Default Kenwood displays

After a year of Sirius in one car, it's past time to add it to my other car! I'm probably going with a Kenwood to get the D-mask face, but I'm curious about the display. How easy is it to read in bright sun?

I'm leaning toward the X869 or X969 to get the 2 line display, but no retailers in my area sell them. I hate to try mail order without seeing it first.

I'm also thinking about the MP922. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Very easy to read in sunlight, and very good at night too!

Kenwood has some of the best displays you can find anywhere.

here is the response I got from Pete who monitors this board from Kenwood USA. I was asking about the upgrade from the 569 to the 869 or 922

First of all, you'll have a lot of new features with either deck you choose to upgrade to. Both include 'SRS WOW' which is an awesome feature for improving sound quality -- especially if you have factory speakers or don't have a subwoofer.

As for the difference between the two, the x869 will have a better equalizer as well as the Kenwood Excelon audio-grade electrolytic capacitor which is also found in your x569. The capacitor will allow for improved electric polarity internally as well as little to no current leakage which can be an issue with non-audio-grade caps. Only the Excelon line features this and it does improve sound quality. Also, the x869 will have a 2-year warranty instead of a one-year.

Other than that, they are identical. Good luck with your decision, and feel free to msg me if you have any other questions.

Thanks for your support with Kenwood and Sirius.

Pete

Thanks for the info! That was exactly what I wanted to know.

I picked up the $50 tuner at CC yesterday, and ordered the X869 today.

One last question. Does anyone make a magntic mount Sirius antenna? Has anyone removed the adhesive mount antenna? Did it ruin the paint?

There are new magnetic mounts coming out, like with the Kenwood H2A car adapter. But none are available that are individually packaged, yet.

I removed my Terk Sirius roof mount from my Focus when I bought my Jeep Liberty. It didn't leave a single mark on the car after being there for about 6 months. You just have to rub off (roll it up and pull off) the adhesive, because it so damn sticky!

Buggy,
Once the antenna is taken off, how easy (or difficult) is it to place on another vehicle?
Thanks.

It very easy, you just have to remove all the old adhesive from the antenna base and tail. Then just request new sticky pads from Terk, they are the same that came with it originally. They sent me one for free, but warned me that they will be charging about $1.50 in the future.

You could use automotive 3M adhesive cut to the right size, but if you want the ones that came with the antenna, you can get them.

4 Lines 36 characters, but no screen saver! It says the text can be large or small. Anyway, I almost bought a head unit with a screen saver, but then later I thought about it and do you really sit there and look at it? I know I glance at my head unit to see the name of a song or an artist, but that is about it. My head unit also changes colors, in fact up to 72 different colors, but that gets on my nerves at night when driving, so I generally pick a single color and leave it there, though I do change the single color from time to time. I guess I am just an old fart! LOL

DABSter,

I was admiring the display on your head unit....it's LCD, right? You can see it just fine in broad daylight, right?

I bought an mp3 CD deck a couple years ago when mp3 CD decks were brand new and all I could find were "glowing gas" displays (I wanted LCD). I cannot see the damn thing during the day unless I shield it with my hand. And then only barely. Grrr. I will never buy anything but LCD again.

Hey LoungeLizard, Yes mine is called color shock LCD and it is VERY visible in broad daylight. I had orginally gotten a KDC-422, but I don't know what it was about it, I could not see the display when there was the slightest amount of light, but it was beautiful at night. If the sun was shinning on a really brite day, you could forget it. So, I box it up and returned it. Then ordered the KDC-MPV6022 from Crutchfield, along with the free SIRIUS tuner at the time. I picked it for the Display, but also because it had a built in Aux In cable with no need for an adaptor. While I was still able to hook the SIRIUS tuner up through the CD Changer Plugin. Its a darn sweet unit and I love Kenwoods. The only major draw back is single line of text for the Sat Radio info. It wont' do Song/Artist at the same time, only one or the other. This is one of the reasons I got the Kenwood Plug & Play on order. But I may end up using it just for in the house and on my home made boombox and keep the current tuner as is. Just depends on a few things once I get it. I like having options though!

When I had the Kenwood X569, if it was at all light outside I couldn't see anything, at night it was nice though. Swapped it for an X869, great in all lights.
