SIRIUS Satellite Radio Begins Shipping 'ORBITER' Plug and Play Receiver to RadioShack Stores
Wednesday June 30, 5:52 pm ET
July Soft Launch at Nearly 6,000 Neighborhood RadioShack Stores Increases SIRIUS' Retail Presence by Almost 50 Percent

NEW YORK and FORT WORTH, Texas, June 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SIRIUS (Nasdaq: SIRI - News) Satellite Radio and RadioShack Corporation (NYSE: RSH - News) today announced the ORBITER Model SR4000 plug and play satellite radio receiver is now being shipped to RadioShack stores across the country. Orbiter will be the only satellite radio receiver offered by RadioShack, the nation's most trusted consumer electronics specialty retailer, when it introduces Sirius satellite products and services at nearly 6,000 neighborhood stores in July.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19991118/NYTH125 )
"We are excited about the opportunity to offer our customers the very best satellite radio content and hardware available," said Don Carroll, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for RadioShack. "By partnering with SIRIUS, RadioShack is continuing to deliver on its reputation for introducing customers to innovative, leading-edge products while making it easy for them to buy and activate subscription-based services."

According to Carroll, RadioShack aligned with SIRIUS because of its stature as the premium satellite radio provider known for delivering the best in commercial-free music and sports programming. SIRIUS features more than 110 channels of music, news, sports, entertainment, and traffic, including over 60 channels of 100-percent commercial-free music, live play-by-play coverage of the NHL and, beginning this fall, the entire NFL season. Through July 17, 2004, the SIRIUS' subscription rate is $9.99 a month with an annual subscription paid in advance.

"We value the opportunity to partner with RadioShack and to tap into their vast store retail network and 35,000 knowledgeable sales associates," said Bob Law, senior vice president, Retail Operations, SIRIUS. "Now, millions of RadioShack customers will be able to experience for themselves the pleasures of SIRIUS Satellite Radio's 100-percent commercial-free music, strong news line-up and unequalled sports coverage, including the NFL."

The ORBITER receiver, which includes an infrared remote, is a transportable SIRIUS satellite radio that can be easily moved from a car to a truck, home, RV or boat. The receiver, which has an MSRP of $99.95, is compatible with mobile and home docking stations and a boombox. The mobile docking station (SM4000) and home docking station (SH4000) have an MSRP of $49.95 each. The optional boombox, allowing listeners to take SIRIUS everywhere they go, has an MSRP of $99.95.

The mobile and home docking kits and boombox provide customers the flexibility to install the unit in a variety of locations using just one SIRIUS subscription. Each kit includes an antenna and RCA audio connections. The mobile docking station features a wireless FM transmitter, which easily transmits the SIRIUS signal to an existing car radio. The boombox operates on AC power or batteries. The ORBITER receiver, mobile and home docking stations and boombox will be available at RadioShack stores, http://www.radioshack.com or by calling 1-888-MY SIRIUS.

Features of the ORBITER receiver include 30 presets, music title and artist scan, multiple search and display modes, three different font/display styles, adjustable audio output level and a clock. A 6-line display features channel number, channel name, category, artist name, song title and time. The receiver also includes the very popular "S-Seek," which prompts users when one of their pre-selected favorite songs is playing anywhere on SIRIUS and lets them switch to it at the touch of a button. Finally, ORBITER features Program Alert, which prompts listeners when favorite programs are playing on other channels.

So I went to the radio shack website and looked it over. Seems nice enough, I think I'll visit the local store and see what they got setup there and if I can help.

From the pictures/description it seems pretty much like a repackaged audiovox pnp2, is this correct?

100 posts!

Now I got two paws and I'm a "loyal listener"

I think it's a repackaged Streamer, not a PNP2.

It is indeed a rebranded Streamer. My understanding is that it has a red display, not the green as represented in the photo's on the web site. If anyone makes the purchase please verify the display color. According to the web site the local Radio Shack stores in my area have them in stock. I am wondering if the rural stores will actually stock them or have to order them. Many of them have very, very limited inventory.

Rural stores are mostly privately owned as well, so it will differ from store to store. I know the store in Clarksville doesn't have them, I haven't checked Chase City (which is a full blown store - still privately owned.) The other store I know of says he carried XM a year ago but there isn't much call for it in Oxford, NC.

Maybe I need to put a big Mongo on my car!

It's a yellowish-slightly orange display (kinda like a squash). I was playing with it yesterday, and it seemed good, but not worth changing out my in dash Clarion for.

Can anyone tell me if the RS (or Streamer) boombox will work with the Audiovox PNP2 receiver? Just curious...don't expect to buy one any time very soon, but one never knows.

No, the connectors are located differently.

PNP=Jensen
Streamer=Orbiter=Traveler

No Audiovox has their own boombox for the PNP1, PNP2 and Jensen PNP. While these boomboxes probably have the exact same specs, the connectors are different as the Audiovox units have the connectors on the back whereas the Streamer has them on the bottom of the unit.

That is interesting, so it isn't RED as it has been suggested. I really love my RED display on my Jensen PNP. The RED is especially nice for night driving because its not harsh on the eyes at all.

No, it is a slightly paler orange than the PNP2, even when hot.

I am not sure I would like that color, I would probably have to see it first. I am holding with the Jensen PNP for now at least until the 2.5 generation stuff comes out later in the year.
