Default Xact Boombox Review

I ordered the Boombox from Flying J E-Store on Sunday September 4th and it was delivered on September 13. They were very apologetic, because apparently they were upheld at customs. Due to this they contacted SIRIUS and had me one overnighted. So, I am still unclear as to if they have them in stock or not.

The packaging is the black and white box just like the Stream Jockey came in. It was very well padded and arrived intact. Don't look for a manual because there was none in my box.

All the pictures I seen made this Boombox look much bigger than it really is. I was very pleased with the size and it actually looks very nice. It is made from molded light weight plastic, so it doesn't feel very durable. The gray speaker material playing off the gray of the Xact unit itself is rather catchy. Yes, the front cover is material, but it fits very snuggly and doesn't appear it will be easy to rip off or tear, though I am sure your mileage will vary with use.

ANTENNA: It is the home kit antenna and it has a wire wrap to wrap the antenna wire around in the rear of the Boombox. It has a place to store it in the back when not used, but also has a rubber gasket like that you can shove the antenna up through so that it gets a good view of the sky. You can turn it which ever way is necessary for you to get reception. I like the fact that the plug in for the Boombox is fully exposed, because I like to attach secondary antennas to my Boombox and this will make it easy to do and yet leave the home antenna in place for when you want to grab it and go.

AC POWER: The power cord is the type like a notebook has with the normal plug on the end and the transformer switch in the middle of the wire. The power output is 12 volts @ 3.5 amps.

BATTERY POWER: Behind each speaker there is a door that opens and each one takes 4 D Batteries. I have not had time to check battery life, but will try and do this over the weekend and report back.

AUX INPUT: For adding an IPOD, CD Player etc

AUX OUTPUT: I was able to plug this directly into my home receiver. I also plugged it into a powered sub and this of course will add bass.

SOUND: When I first turned it on I was like GEEZ!! because what I mainly heard was a terrible vibration. The battery doors on the back were vibrating with the bass. So, I made sure they were snapped shut good. This seemed to fix the issue, though I can see this may end up causing a headache. Perhaps when loaded with batteries this would make the doors fit tighter. It would be easy to fix though, so I don't see this as a major issue. Now down to the nitty gritty. SQ, well as I suspected there is very little bass output. But this baby will get loud. I hear very very minimal amount of distortion through the small 4" speakers. I am already thinking about a speaker upgrade, but have yet to find out how to get to the speakers. What impressed me is that I hooked up a little small full range SUB that I have and man oh man... BASS I was like UH HUH!!! So, this little Boombox with the Aux Out actually works with a full range sub to give you all that missing base. This is good for use at home, but is that really feasible for taking it out to the beach? I think not. But for using it at home or the office this is one killer little Boombox.

Putting the tuner in and taking the tuner out of the Boombox You just match the connector up at the bottom and push it against the boombox and it locks in place. When you hit the release the tuner just pops forward for you to pull it out of the connector. Very easy....

Pros: Small footprint, easy to setup, aux input, aux output, large volume wheel that lights up, taking the tuner in and out of the boombox super easy.

Cons: Possible vibration from the battery doors, volume doesn't work from the remote, not very durable for heavy outdoor use, no manual included.

Packaging....

This is it right out of the box.

This is the back of it with the battery compartments doors removed.

This is it with the antenna and power supply.

This is the back again, see the aux inputs, aux outpts on the left side.

Here it is in all its glory up close.

Here it is turn on and working..... SWEET!

Overall I think this boombox was designed to look unique or different than ordinary boomboxes. It accomplishes this, but it does so with a cost. Because of the design its not as durable as previously released boomboxes. I plan to keep this unit for use on my night stand.

Thanks for the review! We can always count on you DAB I wonder when these boomboxes will be more widley available. I went into the Flying J store (gas station) but they still had the streamers, but advertised the XACT unit on all the pumps (might just be online only).
I might get the XACT boombox with the CD player

They are at a fixed angle. Both are pointed outward from the center of the unit. Like this /O\

Its actually a bit bigger than the Audiovox due to multi box design, left center and right components. It takes up a bit more space on the desk, but not terribly so. The Audiovox boombox is sleeker in terms of its design.

I got some shallow basket speakers tonight. Taking those cloth covered speaker grills off was a freaking nightmare. You have to be very careful as to not rip the material. The Right speaker is a snap to replace. However, the left one has electronics just like the Audiovox Boombox. I tried a regular 4" speakers initially and there was just no way it was going in there. So, I then tried shallow basket speakers, again no way it was going in without moving some electronics. So, I moved those electronics and was at last able to get the shallow basket Pioneer's to fit. I am happier with the sound now. However, I do not recommend this speaker upgrade for the novice. For what I plan to use this boombox the speaker upgrade was probably not necessary, but since I like to piddle, I decided to go for it. I find the highs and lows much more crisp and clean just like when I upgraded my Audiovox Boombox. Most folks will probably be happy with the stock speakers anyway. I am kind of nuts, if I know I can make something sound better, I just have to do it.

This is with the left side open, you can see the electronics. Notice how its mounted at the bottom, I couldn't get regular or shallow basket speakers to fit.

Here is a shot so you can see the speaker cover, as well as the original speaker that came in the unit.

This is where I relocated the electronics in order to get the shallow basket speakers to mount. The regular speakers would still not mount.

Here is a close up of the Pioneer mounted on the left side.

Here is both sides.

The info on Xact's web site says it comes with 5 watt speakers, these are clearly marked 8 watts.

Yes this was a disappointment on this boombox, but I sort of had a feeling that was going to be the case, since the volume on the remote only worked when using the headphone out jack on the side of the tuner itself.

I know the volume control on the Sportster remote will work via the boombox, as will the JVC, but this is published info on the SIRIUS web site.

Could you route a stereo cable from the headphone jack on the side to the auxillary input? If so you could configure it that way and get volume control from the remote.

Actually YES it does have a built in rubberized handle. Even someone with large hands can use this handle.

This is not the unit that has the FM/AM CD Player, I had no need of either of those myself.

If you notice in this close up view, there are some slight indentions on each side, it maybe enough to gain access to the head phone out-put. It would require a very small angled plugin. But here is the rub. When you put the boombox into Aux Input mode. It automatically kills the power to the tuner. So no can do.

Its too bad that you can't control the volume via the remote, but I can't really say I am that bothered by this myself. I plan to use this one in my bed room exclusively. I am actually figuring on getting the JVC and the big JVC Boombox with the digital controlled volume for use outdoor use.
