Default Question about the FM transmitter on the Starbase

It has been reported by some that the wireless FM transmitter is not good at all on the new Starbase.

Does anyone know why it is so bad??? Isn't it the same wireless FM transmitter as in all of the other units??? I know it comes from the tuner so would it posiibly work better if the tuner were placed right next to the radio in the car??

I have a 2005 Volvo S40 and have discovered that there is no way currently to hardwire a satellite radio to the car's audio system. I tested a PNP3 using the wireless FM transmitter last night and it worked great. However, there really is no place for it on the dash. The Starbase, however, would fit perfectly and would look clean and neat as well.

If this is true about the Starbase wireless FM transmitter than that really sucks because the Starbase would fit perfectly. The PNP3 is kind of an eyesore as far as where I would have to place it on the dash.

Why is the FM transmitter so bad if this a brand new unit from Sirius.

Should I even try the Starbase and just return it if it doesn't work?

Thanks.

I would give it a try, if your PnP III worked OK then the Starbase should too. If it's not working as you wanted you can always get something else that may work better. Good luck & lets us know how it goes.

The Starbase doesn't broadcast the FM signal like a PNP unit does. To imply that it's bad is actually an incorrect statement and I can only assume that whoever told you that didn't know what they were talking about, nor do the understand the setup of the Starbase. It was not designed to work the same way a PNP unit works, it was designed to be hardwired using the FM Switching Box. There is no reason whatsoever that your factory head unit can't be setup using the SATSWB, because all you are doing is unpluggin the atenna from the factory head unit, pluggin in the SATSWB, then plugging the head unit antenna into the SATSWB. Once connected to the Starbase, you get direct broadcast from the tuner to your head unit with no interference from your local stations as your head unit antenna is actually disengaged when the Starbase tuner is on. If you want regular FM, you simply turn off the Starbase.

In my opinion this method isn't as easy to setup, but it is indeed a much better set up and actually offers a bit better SQ than just using the FM Trans alone.

There is no FM Antenna in the Starbase, that's why you won't pick up any good signal from the Starbase wirelessly.

Wait - I thought this unit did not have to be hardwired??

Here is a quote from the description of the Starbase -

"The slim unit allows mounting in single din slots of vehicles, or with Velcro to the car dashboard. It also includes a built-in FM modulator that can connect the unit wirelessly to an existing radio over as many as 100 available channels."

Is this not true??

Now I am very confused - I thought it had a wireless FM transmitter - but that it just did not owrk very well - I figured I would just give it a try anyway - maybe I would luck out - if not just return it - but are you saying that it doesn't even have wireless capability at all??

If true - then all of the descriptions and advertising of this unit by Sirius are completely misleading.

Like I said in the PM to you, the wireless does work, however the quality is so bad that it's definatley not worth it. The only chance I think you would have is to get the little wire they gave away for the Sportsters and try that in the FM Out Jack.

What is the big deal with using the provided SATSWB?

Jeremy do you feel the Starbase was really designed to be used primarily to be hardwired with the SATSWB? Don't you also have to provide power to the tuner and I don't think it comes with a cigarette lighter adapter either does it? I am waiting on mine to arrive on Monday.

Everything I have read made it sound like this unit was more or less meant to be a permanent install, this is why it was designed as such.

The FM antenna wire may work since the big issue is that there is no built in antenna like on PNP units. I will certainly try that when mine arrives just to find out if it works. I plan to hook mine up via my aux-input as a direct connect.

Thanks all. Sorry for being such a pain in the ass - I should be receiving the unit by Friday and will keep everyone updated.

Gotta have my SIRI!!!!

DAB - the 2005 Volvo S40 (and V50 and XC90) have some weird fiber optic cabling instead of ordinary antenna wires so I can't connect the SATSWB or do an Aux in - I called Volvo and they explained ths to me and said they have received many complaints about this and that they are working on a solution - but that one probably won't be available until the 2006 models come out. So I think wireless is the only way I can go right now.

You are no pain in the ass at all, you are just trying to figure out your best plan for installation that is totally understandable.

Thanks for the explaination on why you couldn't use the SATSWB. Its unfortunate that they did that, but it sounds like you are stuck until they do come up with a solution.

I hope the Starbase with the FM antenna wire plugged in, will give you a strong enough signal to satisfy you. Please do report back your findings. I ordered mine from CC, but got the ground shipping and so it won't arrive until Monday

Do you have any of the antenna wire things they gave out for the sportster? I was thinking that would make a great little antenna for this unit ... But I don't have one to try.

oh also, should I try to place the tuner as close as possible to the car radio?

Since that FM antenna wire isn't very long that would probably be a pretty good idea.

Where did you order your Starbase from? Circuit City?

Yeah I ordered it last night but I did the 2-3 day air for $13 so that I could try to install over the weekend - hoping to get it tomorrow or Friday -

By the way - is there any chance in hell that the one we ordered from Circuit City does not include the tuner and antenna etc. like it says on the Circuit City website?? It's gotta be a mistake that they are telling you to purchase the Pioneer tuner and antenna. How can they make such an obvious mistake??? I hope no one buys the Pioneer Tuner and antenna - whoever does is gonna be pissed!!!

Let's see who gets their Starbase first - if you do then I want my money back for the Air delivery!! LOL
