Default Why do the limit the display like they do!! (rant)

I just don't get why the radio manuf. limit the displays like they do. I had a kenwood HU that I loved and hope it would never die (9017). The reason why I liked it is because the display would show the station name and number on one line, and the artist song on another like this:

Well last week the radio finally died. I am going to see if I can fix it, but I went by a friends house that had an Alpine 7998 unit that was practically new, so he gave it to me. The display on the fold out screen is huge, yet I can not view station name, artist name, or song name at the same time. Heck, It won't show artist and song name at the same time. What the hell is the point of a huge screen, if you are not going to let me customize my viewing on it.

On a side note, the new Alpine Sirius Tuner changes channels a whole lot faster then my Kenwood Tuner (which will be up for sale soon [two of them]).

Sorry just ranting because it iritates me, and to see if anyone else has found a HU (not monitor) that displays like my old Kenwood did, the new ones do not!!

My brother-in-law installed a Kenwood in his SUV and it has the same issue. You have to hit a button to scroll through all the info. That's why I would have chosen a PNP in a heartbeat.

Another glaring gap between a company's research and usability group and the design/engineering team.

Once SIRIUS becomes even more engrained in the market place, they'll have to support every bit of data that the service provides. CD receivers are no longer for just listening anymore.

Yea it's a shame!! The bad part is, during development you would figure that someone on the team would go "HEY, I think we should display the artist and title on the same line!!" With the others going "Hey, that sounds like a no brainer!!" Instead we got "lets make you have to push a button to see what the channel name is, then hit it again to find out the artist, then hit it again to find out the name of the song...thats brilliant!!"

There are a lot of features that are great on the PnP, but I refuse to have a seperate box placed outside, so I guess I will deal with it at least untill I get my old Kenwood back up and running. The funny thing is that my kenwood was the first Sirius ready unit that came out (notice there is no dog icon next to the sirius ready words). Then they went backwards!!

It used to be that smaller was better, when the only real info you'd need from a receiver was the station number. This worked well with removable faceplates.

But now, bigger is actually better. And as far as removability, I just hide mine in a glove compartment. If somebody breaks in, it's not because they see something to steal, it's that they're guessing something's in there. And besides, who's just going to steal the main face/PNP unit? For satellite, you'll need the cradle and antenna. Too much work for a common thief.

Yeah, and unless there's hacks for Sirius, stealing something that requires a subscription to be of any value is pretty damn stupid.

Well lets not put all these companies in the same boat. JVC evidently did their home work. This is the only head unit/tuner combo that I know of that gives you so much information on the display. Category, Channel Number, Preset Number, Artist, Song Title, it will also scroll the Composer on the Artist line if that info is supplied by Sirius. Along with the clock and signal strength meter. The only bit of info missing is the channel name and you can get that with a single push of a button.

The other thing you get with JVC is the clock is set on the head unit by the Sirius Satellites and this baby even has the look ahead feature so that you can see what artist or song is playing before switching. If this thing has s-seek, I really be in hog heaven, but right now JVC's head unit/tuner combo gives you more bang for the buck than ANYONE else.

I can't say enough about the display and it doesn't matter if you're in direct sunlight or on a late night drive, the multi colored display that can be inverted is fantastic. The best part is you don't have to pay $500.00 for this baby either.

Kenwood, Alpine, Panasonic, Clarion, Sony and Pioneer to name a few can all kiss my butt. LOL

I'm going to do some searching. A buddy wants this radio bad. I like the new Alpines, so I might look at those displays.

The bad thing about Alpines are they only have a 16-character text limit, which sucks when you have a song title that is longer than that since the Alpine will only show a portion of the title. The Kenwood, JVC, and other units on the other hand have a 36-character text limit.

Ern is right the Alpine displays have the crappy text limit. Finding one that shows anything other than artist and song will be a chore unless you are willing to throw big bucks at it. Most of them will only show one or the other but not both without having to push buttons. The 2005 Alpine's have been a TOTAL disappointment in my opinion and I've had diehard Alpine fans tell me that.

Thats the type of feedback I have been wanting!! I have never had one once of trouble seeing the whole title or scrolling with my old Kenwood. That ready has been my all out favorite ever. I might check into the JVC's. They were junk when I worked at Circuit City, but looking at them now, it seems that they have increased in quality.

I will say that this Alpine sounds awsome!! The crossover and I-personalize have been the shit. It's a shame that they can't do the simple no brainer things. This is something that should have been looked over in the testing/developing phase. Looks like they just said screw it!!

I traded the Alpine that I bought from one buddy for a KDC-X969 that another buddy had (he was wanting the Alpine and was a little mad that I got to it first lol). Got to reactivate the Kenwood tuner, but I think I am going to like this one better. The sound might be better with the Alpine (still playing with EQ's on this one), but I like the display better. Still might get my old one fixed. Put it in the old ladies car maybe so I will have sirius in there.

Now I might be getting rid of the Alpine Sirius Tuner if I can't return it.
