Default Can someone explain the difference in 2.5G and 3G?

Hi All,

I am pretty new to this site but I would like to thank yo all for the information I have uncovered. I too am awaiting a portable with recording capabilities for when I am out of the car and Howard is on.
I have been following the threads regarding the Rego and I keep seeing references to 2.5G and 3G? Can anyone explain this too me? Also, are then any plans to have a recordable device in a head unit?
Thanks again for all the information. Have a great weekend and thanks in advance!

to SBS and soon the

Gen 3 are supposed to be smaller (allowing for a smaller device), heat up less, and do not draw as much power (better for a portable). They are also 30% cheaper (which won't mean anything to consumers) to produce and that will lower subscriber acquisition costs. They start coming out soon, or at least that is what they say.

TX WJ told you about as much as we know about the 3.0g chipset. We know there will be more features, but what those are no one knows. One thing we are thinking is there will be an artist seek, instead of just the current artist/song combo. I am sure there will be a choice of portables at some point. So, only time will tell what the 3.0g chipset brings us.

One thing that was announced during the conference call was that they are going to give us a sneak peak at some of the new 3.0g tuners coming. I think this is some sort of New York event. Maybe someone could be more specific about it.

The sneek peek was the end of August if I'm not mistaken. I don't know the specific date.

I will be disappointed if the next generation doesn't offer more song seeks, plus the addition of artist seek, more presets, perhaps better displays.

Smaller size does not matter to me personally, I find the Sportster small enough. Smaller size "can" shrink the nice large displays most Sirius receivers have.... improved displays would mitigate smaller screens.

Less power consumption and lower operating temps are a net plus.

For myself the recording and playback features are of minor interest but I am sure they will be popular.

I agree with yea on that one! I wouldn't mind changing my Xact XTR1. But only thing I like about it is close to portable and has a built-in headphone jack! I hope one of the new 3.0g chips comes close to it beside the Rego!

I agree with more song seeks and I just hope the do the right implimentation on the artist seek. We really need the ability to select rather we want it to search by artist, song or artist/song combo when its saved into the memory. This search all by artist or song that XM has in my opinion is crappy. But I do have to give them credit, they did come out with it first and months ahead of Sirius. The Audiovox XR9 has 30 tune selects. I don't see them giving us many more than 30, but maybe I am wrong.

I am not much interested in seeing displays get smaller myself, but I guess they will if the tuners themselves get smaller. My thing is for them to have tuners that run much cooler that use less power so that they last longer in boomboxes and in portable applications.

We also need the ability to turn off displays all together so when these tuners are used in boomboxes or as a portable they will last just a little longer on battery.

What would really be cool is if Sirius gave us the ability to input the artist or song we want directly into the s-seek memory, but I don't think that is possible because they use a PID to indentify songs and/or artist.

It is going to be interesting and like everyone else I can't wait to see what they come up with. Hopefully they will at the time they show these things off give us some info on the feature sets.

DAB,

I agree proper implementation of song or artist seeks is important... and I too would welcome that ability to enter a code to set a seek for specific song. It took me months to get one song saved in my seek list. I listened to one channel nearly all the time until I finally got it. Since there must be a database of PIDs it would be nice to assign a code to each that the user could manually input into the receiver. An incredible amount of work to do that but couldn't it be a primarily automated process to assign codes to each PID with some human checking at the end of the process? Given I don't have a clue on how things currently work I suppose I may not know what I am talking about.

The ability to turn of the lighting on the display would certainly be welcome for receivers using batteries!

It will take a pretty compelling feature set to motivate to replace my Sportster. I don't think the 3Gs are going to provide that. Nice if I'm proved wrong.

Isn't the 3G supposed to be compatible with the new encoding scheme which will give more channels and interactive services?
