Default Any plans for a handheld portable unit?

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any plans to release a handheld portable unit with a self-contained battery and antenna like the XM model. I have an iPod in a phone cradle with an aux-in in my car so it would be nice to be able to switch it out with a sirius unit. I'd like to get serious but I don't want to waste time/money installing something in a leased car. Especially if it needs one of those ugly antennas...

I asked customer service and they told me to buy a rego.

Thanks!

If you want a radio in your car, you don't want a handheld portable unit. The "ugly" antenna being outside the car is essential to getting a signal. You would have a lot of trouble getting reception from a built-in antenna inside your car. Those things are really meant to be used outside.

I would suggest getting a PNP with a car kit, the install isn't a big deal at all and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a portable would be if they were available. I'm not handy at all and it only took me about ten minutes to run the antenna wire out the back of my car and mount the cradle on the dash. It's not ugly either, they even have a new antenna out that is much smaller.

To answer your question though, no, there isn't a portable out right now. They say we'll have one before Christmas, but there hasn't been an official announcement yet.

Thanks for the reply!

Really? I'm not overly familiar with the technology that sirius uses but I'm in the satellite voice/data comms industry so I know all about "line of sight" when it comes to satellite antennas. I've never had a problem using Globalstar or Iridium sat phones in my car. I would think a portable sirius receiver would do OK. I also did an xm install in my friend's car and we put the antenna on the rear shelf with no problems.
