I agree, the after market headphones make a world of difference. They did for me anyway. For an additional $34.99 plus s&h, it's well worth it.

I was REALLY jazzed about this, until I saw the hook-ups: mulitple cables plugged in...just seems like too many weak points, and looks kinda tacky.
I loved the look of the in-dash unit, until I noticed that it was PERMANENT. Kinda defeats the purpose of a PNP.
Is there ANY unit out there that uses just a cradle of some sort with only 1(ONE) connection(counting the power? I wouldn't mind having to learn some wiring stuff to not have some ghetto looking cigarette lighter plug-in)? If there was such a unit, I know I would be all over it, as there would be features that seem to be missing on the in-dash units, yet still renaming to be fully plug-n-play!
This would also be great for those who are into modding their interiors, or would simply like a clean, installed look, while still being plug-n-play...

Pretty much every other Sirius plug and play on the market will do this.

I personally have no problem with the individual connectors on the Starmate - it eliminates the need for a dock and I have an original Starmate and
I've never had any problem with the connectors failing.

wouldn't a dock be BETTER though? less individual connections to deal with, just slide it into a docking unit, and you're good to go...
Or don't the docks work that way?

That is exactly hw they work. A dock has advantages and disadvantages - they are typically quicker and easier (although in my experience it's hardly a major chore to pull out two or three jacks).

They also make the total package bigger, and they take up space and look kind of ugly when you don't have your PnP connected. Three wires are easy enough to tuck away - for instance if you have one subscription that you use in two vehicles or if you want to plug an mp3 player in instead of the unit. Remember you still plug jacks into a dock anyway, so you'll have to deal with running wires at some point.

I already had a power adapter and antenna from my PnP2's home dock and car docks. When I got my starmate I hooked it up in my car and dropped the old antenna and power cord into my wifes SUV (which we use more for beach trips). The cords stay hidden most of the time until we have a 3 hour drive.

I didn't have to buy a home kit as I already had the old antenna and wall wart fom the PNP2 home kit. I like that I didn't have to buy another home dock and vehicle dock, I could just use what I already have.

Horses for courses I guess.

For people who are on a tight budget, docks are a significant additional expense. I don't think they will mind the new dock-free setup.

I hear a lot of people clamoring for devices with a low price-point. The dockless setup pictured should satisfy them.

Don't presume the project is dead. Xact is still advertising it on their website.

It is entirely possible that they decided to delay it, so they could build it around the new chipset. This will allow them to make a device with noticeably improved features over the original plan.

I'm holding out for that.

How is a different antenna going to improve reception of a line of site type signal? The truth is I have not seen any review done on it that did not comment on the problems with reception. And as I am sure you are well aware of look at the post on the " other " boards about this issue. Better yet ask the retailers which you know I am in everyday what issues they have with it. Matter of fact I was in a BB down here today and an Airware was returned for this reason.

The Myfi/ Airware is a great piece no doubt. Do I wish you could listen live with the S50? Sure (although not sure when I would use it). But the fact is this is a digital satellite signal and is never going to give reliable enough signal to the masses. I mean I spend 350.00 on a "listen live" DSR setup and am mowing my lawn listening to a great NFL game and the signal keeps dropping the game I am going to be ticked. That is why I dropped Direct TV. Works for some people does not for others.
Well said. The hard fact is, both the XM portables and the S50 present us with a compromise.

A guy I know at work recently returned his Pioneer Airware and Antenna Headphones, because he was unable to get acceptable reception inside our building. And XM DOES have a repeater in my area.

Since we often work up to 12 hours per day, it really sucks that he can't listen to satellite radio for such a long period of time. And the main reason he bought it was for use at work. So now he has to go back to listening to his portable CD player, which isn't as compact as the Airware or S50. Which of course means he also has to tote around a supply of CD's with him.

So he's stuck lugging the player and CD's around in a bulky pouch strapped to his waist. He also loses time having to repeatedly change CD's. And some of the supervisors aren't too happy about that lost time.

Whereas I'll soon be showing up at work with my tiny S50 strapped to my arm--no bulky pouch, CD's and CD player to worry about. I'll have enough stored music to get me through the entire week, without any hassles or reception issues to worry about.

I pay a lawn service to do all of my yardwork, so could care less about reception in the yard. No dog to walk. I don't use public transportation.

Anybody who owns a boat surely has enough money to spring for an additional docking station.

Barring some hot new technology in the future, portable "live" units will continue to present a compromise when used indoors (and even outdoors in some areas) in many places, and will be even worse in areas where no repeater is currently available.

The S50 is looking better and better every day.
