Hey that would solve the other problem I have with Sirius!! (not being able to get home reception) :-) I could live with that fix too..

You won't get any argument from me, I've said that since day one. These moving sats have turned out to be a royal pain in the ass and I don't care what anyone says, reception overall is NOT better its worse. Sure maybe in some high mountain areas, but for the rest of us the poor home reception and other issues tell the real story. The fact is that Sirius management seen this as automobile only service and didn't have the foresight to see people would want to use it in their homes and offices.

So, yes I agree this was a dumb move and one that has created this gap.

and put the extra money into a real repeater network like XM has.
But it wasn't money (mostly) that XM invested in their repeater network. It was control. XM gave Clear Clannel some real control over it's operation early on, in exchange for use of CC antennas for their repeaters. Now CC has sold almost all of the stock that they got for that deal, and now play a small (practically insignificant) role, but XM has the network.

Now, if Sirius were to try to do something similar, much further along in their growth cycle, what would it cost? 20% of the company, like it did for XM? And who would they partner with that has lots of transmitter facilities? Infinity, Entercom, or another big commercial radio player? Maybe a cell phone provider like Sprint? What if their price was access to programming for their phones, what if they wanted the content cleaned up (censored)? Would that be a mistake???

I disagree with a reason. I live in the west where the higher angle of satellites is a big improvement for driving. I have driven through the cascade mountains without a dropout, but my nephew said he can't listen to XM on in that area at all. Also when I went to Yosemite, Sirius shined, but XM is blocked to the south. So in car reception is VERY important to me, and I'm willing to pay for it. The home is a pain but I have managed by placing antenna's on the roof. Now I would like to see Sirius solve the in home issue by adding additional repeaters to make it more convenient for boombox listeners. I'm also hoping that they add a high powered satellite in a stationary orbit which would also help for in home reception. Then we could have the best of both systems to work with giving Sirius a distinct advantage. I predict Sirius will launch a 4th stationary satellite at some point in the next couple of years but this is just an educated guess.

Yes, home reception issues can be resolved by placing the antenna outdoors and its not like XM doesn't have some issues in this area as well. However, there have been an awful lot of folks that have either been unable or unwilling to take this extra step. I think there are solutions, but the fact is Sirius doesn't have the funding to implement them so it isn't likely any of these fixes are possible anytime soon.

I also think the circumstances in which XM has inferior reception to Sirius are far and few in-between. The decision that Sirius made has in fact added to the generation gap in equipment. I have seen no evidence whatsoever that XM has been at any disadvantage whatsoever in terms of reception for having geostationary sats. In fact I'd say it quite the opposite. I am sure there are some such as yourself that has seen some benefit, but in my opinion when considering the whole country, this appears to have put Sirius at a disadvantage.

I wonder how many people have simply NEVER subscribed to Sirius because they were told by others that reception isn't so good and almost nonexistent inside the home without taking extra measures.

The argument about which satellite technology is best boils down to angle of elevation. Sirius went with the 60 to 90 degree for best sat coverage and XM went with the diminishing 45 degree with more repeaters. It is simple engineering.

Depending on where you live, XM could be a better choice if you are too lazy or incapable of placing the Sirius antenna where it can see the sky. OTOH if you live where there is no XM repeater, you are much better off with Sirius, especially the further north you live.

Why are we talking about this? I feel like I am chewing used gum.

Back to the S50... I was at my local Charlotte Best Buy this afternoon, and they had a spot on their tuner wall for the S50, as well as the price/info card for it (they have it listed for the $359 MSRP). The sales guy told me that they're expecting their demo unit for the tuner wall this week, and then they're expecting to have tuners for sale sometime the following week.

They also had a nice promotional pamphlet for the S50 with some pictures and describing the features.

Well spit it out and quit putting it behind your ear. ROTFLOL

In regards to which service has the best technology or picked the best angle of elavation I think you are right it depends on where you live. Strange though I see many threads where people can't get reception with Sirius, hardly ever see any on XM forums. I guess this could be due to the huge repeater network. There must be an awful lot of lazy Sirius subscribers or could it be that Sirius's choice wasn't as much of an advantage as it was hoped in regards to reception. We could argue this till the cows come home, but the proof is in the many threads.

Seahawks, this is GREAT news. It seems this puppy is getting close to release. The sooner the better if you ask me. I am excited to see some hands on reviews by individual subscribers. I think this will do more the get rid of some of the negative thoughts out there then anything I or anyone else could say.

You getting one when they are released?

Don't scream great news yet DAB, I'd take anything coming from a BB employees mouth with a grain of salt, in fact I'd take any Sirius release date from any source with a grain of salt.

But it's coming for sure!

No matter how nice it looks and how much I'd like to get one, I'm going to hold off for a while. I have absolutely no need for the car kit since I'm using an Xact Visor in my car, which is nicely hidden in a storage pocket. Until they start selling the S50 as a stand-alone unit, or decide to package it with a home kit instead of a car kit, I'm going to hold off.

I normally feel the same way about their info, but it definitely looks promising when the price/info card is already out and a bracket is hanging on the tuner wall to mount the S50. I doubt they'd be taking up tuner display space on their wall if the S50 wasn't coming very soon.

Great news! I've got mine pre-ordered and I'm hoping it comes in the next week or two.
Now, back to the other discussion. Since I plan on recording content for my S50 at home, I guess I'll have to go out and put an antenna up on the roof. My XM MyFi works perfectly in the window all the time, but when I've used my Audiovox PNP2 with the indoor kit in the past, the reception was so-so. I have Dish Network in the house, so I haven't even used my Sirius PNP inside in over a year. But when I did, I remember that with the antenna in the window it would be perfect for a couple of hours and then go in and out at other times as the satellites moved. Guess I'll have to take that plunge and put an antenna outside. Kind of a pain, but definately worth it for recorded, portable Sirius content!

You should look for the TERK SIR-5 Marine Antenna. It is a sleek white adjustable, exterior antenna with 30 feet of cord (I've purchased on E-bay for about $50.00). Much better looking than the outdoor antenna Terk SIR-6, which just looks like a bracket and a bolt. It seems to be a more powerful antenna, than the one you get with the home kits. I have two of them. One is in my den, on the southern wall. The other is on the roof at my work. I've been very happy with the results. I can't wait for my pre-ordered S50. Happy Listening!
