The Visor is in the store. Circuit City has it on display for $50 with no rebates.

This is pretty funny--just as I got this message, I was at Circuit City buying the Visor home kit. I will let you know how it all works out.

OK, I just activated it. This Visor is pretty unique. There is no satellite radio even close to looking like it. Here are some quick specs:

(1) The power button is on the top of the unit on the left side. Just to the right of the power button are six preset keys.

(2) To the left of the display are two buttons: "Band" and "Display". The Band button switches between 6 sets of presets containing 6 stations each--A through F. The Display button lets you select what you want to see on the display--the Artist, Song, or Artist/Song (scroll). The text color is orange.

(3) To the right of the display there are two other buttons: "Menu" and "Category". The Menu button gives you some of the usual options (display, FM Transmitter, Auto Shutoff, etc) , but apparently not song select. There is a new option called "Parental Block" where you can block whatever channels you want. After blocking the channels, you set a code that must be entered to have the channels unblocked. I guess that will be good for those that want to block Howard from their young children.

The "Category" button lets you pick a certain genre of music, where you can just jump to that category by pressing the button.

(4) The antenna, ac adapter, and audio out holes are all on the left side of the Visor. A nice improvement from the Starmate, where they were on different sides.

(5) The wackiest thing has to be the "flip display" option. When you select it, the text flips upside down, thereby allowing you to mount the visor upside down, which would presumably be helpful if you are trying to fit the visor in some odd spot. I can't see the utility of it now--but, then again, I just got it--maybe something will come up.

(6) You get a nice remote control with the unit. It is about the equivalent of three credit cards stacked on top of each other.

It's unique, but pretty bare-bones on the features, other than the text flip. Most of the satellite radio addicts on this board would be disappointed with the small screen and lack of options. But, it's very cheap ($49 at Circuit City, with a home set cost at $39.99) and appears to be very flexible in allowing you places to mount it in your car.

Sorry, I don't have a camera with me.

Geez, thanks for the tease. Go buy a camera right now, lol.

Seriously, thanks for the quick review. The radio just hit the stores today. What did the Circuit City guys say about it? Were you the first one to buy one?

The Circuit City were I went (Santa Monica, CA) was swamped this afternoon, so there was nobody available to help me. I just wandered over to the car stereo section and saw the Visor, in a smaller red and white box. Right next to it was the home kit. I think that there were only two Visors and two home kits. So, there'd only be one of each left after I bought it.

Overall, I like it. Not as much as the Sportster Replay, but this would be a good radio for people just starting out or who want a second radio for their spouse's car or something like that. One thing I can say is that the FM Transmitter in the car is fantastic. Xact seems to do a really good job with that type of thing. Also, it didn't seem to run hot, but I did have the AC on in the car.

Well you can thank Xact crappy web site for that. If you look there is not a single mention of a home kit and not one single picture with it in anything but an auto.

zaj, thanks for the mini review. Too bad this baby doesn't have s-seek. I think that alone will be a total turn off for many users. Though I have seen subscribers post that they never used the s-seek feature.

Like you said being a beginner type tuner it maybe okay, but someone such as myself that has been around while would never be happy with this unit.

zaj,

Thanks for the quick review. I guess I don't get to be first to review this thing

The purpose of the upside down text is so you can actually mount this thing upside down on the visor of the car and still read it. Is this thing light?

Default Ordered Mine

You can't beat it for $50 and no rebates (I hate rebates, just another way to try and rip you off). Ordered mine last night. It told me none were available locally for pick-up so it will be shipped. Probably be here by next weekend.

Just got mine - so far I love it.

Feature set - easy to navigate through channels. Simetimes it's a little awkwards as far as when you have to hit select, but not that bad.

Design - mechanically, looks nice. The IR for the remote is on the top so the whole top housing is made from IR-grade plastic. There are quite a few vents on the top and the bottom - be careful not to spill anything in there!! Buttons are hard plastic with decent tactile response. The bracket is made from a heavily reinforced grade of plastic and looks pretty tough. The snap holding it in place is long enough that it cam move easily and sohuldn't break. The bracket is held together with a bolt and kept from free-pivoting with teeth inside the hinge point - a nice touch - high quality. Lens is molded - depending on the materials used, it could be susceptible to scratching. (Can you tell I am an engineer?)

Display - LED based - that is, to say - bright and not polarization based, like LCD's are. It looks just fine with polarized sunglasses on. Some bi-refringence in the lens, but not so bad you can't see through it.

Connections - all on left hand side. Power, antenna, audio, and FM. I'm not sure what the difference between audio and FM are. The antenna connection is a press-fit coax conneciton, fit is tight. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for power jack - fit is loose, and if it is bumped it loses power. This is a fairly major design flaw, and sohuld have been fixed along time ago.

sound quality - I haven't gotten around to installing any RCA jacks to the head unit as I had planned, but after listening to it, I don't think I will need to. The FM transmitter seems to work fantastic - I don't have anything hard-wired in for audio, but it sounds as good as the cleanest FM radio station.

size - layout - etc - size is a little bigger than I thought - a little wider than a radar detector, but not as deep. It fits perfectly inside the center-console pocket in my Silverado. Front buttons are easy to get to, but the top 6 pre-set station buttons are on the top and awkward for me to get to, expecially the back row. The button numbering-layout is awkward too - 1,3,5 are in front, 2,4,6 are in back, but staggered.

Overall, for ~$50, I'm very happy. I would advise, however, to get the extended warranty - products are never perfect when they ship. This was a couple of weeks late getting out - that tells me that there was a problem somewhere. Maybe it's fixed, maybe it's band-aided for this generation. I guess only time wil ltell.

Yeah, it's light. It's a bit wider than the Starmate (which I used to have in our second car), but feels the same to me.

The more I use it, the more I like it. Especially when you consider the price.

Good comments. I can't emphasize enough how good the FM transmitter is. It is worlds better than the Audiovox XR9 that I also use for XM.

Zaj - are you having the same problem with the electrical connector that I described - intermittent contact?

No, not yet. Seems to be a good fit. Maybe you have a bad unit?
