Default Starmate Replay bug or information stream bug?

Hey Guys,

I just did a quick search but I didn't come across anything, so thought I would ask here. If I missed it, sorry about it. This takes a few minutes to explain what I am seeing, so hang in there. BTW, I've got 4 different Sirius receivers, so I am pretty well versed in how they work and wht to do, but I am new to the Starmate Replay, so maybe its me....I hope so.

Brand new Starmate Replay. I activated it last week and have been using it making sure all is working ok..audio great...all looks good...and I REALLY love the artists search feature, which is the root of my question.

I just tried to set "Car Talk" on NPR stream 134 (NPR Now) into my song search feature. (It's one of my favorite shows to listen to while I'm working on the computer). I can't get my search to set.

The Starmate Replay will not allow me to set any search for that channel...no artist or song. I can however set a song search (but not artist search) on stream 135, which is NPR Talk. No big deal I thought because Car Talk is rebroadcast on stream 135 one hour later. So, one hour later, I set up a song search for Car Talk on 135 when it rebroadcasts. The Starmate Replay takes the song search as it should. About 2 minutes after doing this, my search alarm goes off, and in the display shows Car Talk (like I expected), but also shows a SIRIUS entry that I can pick as well.

So, I'm thinking thats odd (I never knowingly set a SIRIUS entry in my favs), I select SIRIUS from the song search, and it takes me to a channel that happens to have SIRIUS on the display at that given time...I believe it was the Christian Talk channel...can't remember, and probably unimportant. So I'm thinking, thats wacky. About 1 minute later, the same thing happens....search feature beeps, and I select SIRIUS again, and it takes me to ABC News. It seems that in setting up my search for Car Talk, that somehow extra information (SIRIUS) was programmed into my favorites as as a separate search entry.

Odd again, In checking my favorites, I can see Car Talk when scrolling through my favs, but I don't see SIRIUS as a separate entry anywhere. So I delete "Car Talk" from my favorites. It deletes as it should, and I can scroll through my favorites and verify Car Talk is gone.

I'm using my "Car Talk" search quite successfully on the old PNP units (Audiovox PNP2 and Sanyo CRSR-10), so this looks like its limited to the artists search feature only.

Can anyone else try their Starmate Replay and verify this?

1. Try setting up a an artists or song search on stream 134.....nothing happens for me on that stream. Try stream 100 or 101. I can't set an search for these two channels, (as well as a whole string of other channels...122, 124, 126, 127.....its a long list.)

2. Set up a search on stream 135 and see what happens. I was only able to do a song search. Set it for song search. After awhile, I get the search alarm feature going off any time any stream happens to display SIRIUS, or it least seems that way. Pick the channel and it will take you to any variety of channels...usually talk channels, but sometimes music channels.

At this point, I don't know if this is a StarmateReplay issue or a information stream issue. Right now, just having someone else that can verify this would be helpful. As said earlier, I searched, but if I missed it, please forgive me.

Dave

Dave

I dont have a Starmate Replay, but I can verify what you are saying.

when you set an Artist Seek or Song Seek it is not based on the text
that you see on the screen but the "codes" for that data
Car Talk has neither a Artist or Program ID
134|Car Talk|Car Talk|NPR Now|News/Talk|10||||2005-10-09 10:13:40Z

the blank areas after the category(10) are for the ID codes

so it would be
134|Car Talk|Car Talk|NPR Now|News/Talk|10|PROGRAMIDCODE|ARTISTIDCODE||2005-10-09 10:13:40Z

if it were sent, although this is back from October they are still sending
it the same way currently

sometimes, not always chan 135 sends a generic program id(^O) which
is why sometimes you can set the Song Seek on that chan, but the ^O
that you dont see is used for hundreds of Sirius promos, etc, so it will
match hundreds of times

I guess this answer is too wordy and confusing
the short version is that you are 100% correct and your radio
is functioning correctly .. and it will not change untill those chans start
sending Program and Artist ID codes

Thanks Dale for the quick reply.

Thats good and bad all rolled into one. Good in that the receiver is working right, but bad that I'm going to miss the ability to set Car Talk as a search. (and other channels as well that broadcast in the same information format you describe).

I guess at this point all I can do is hope that Sirius reformats their broadcast information stream so I can have this search feature back. After posting my question, I spent some time checking what streams I could set a search for and which ones I couldn't. I was somewhat surprised at the number of streams that are affected by this. It's too bad because I'm really going to miss my Car Talk search by upgrading to this receiver.....sigh.

Thanks again,

Dave

I noticed same thing but it even happens on a music channel with actual artists and songs. Its on either classic rewind or the vault (can't remember which) where I can't set memo (song/artist save ) on any song for some reason. Odd.

Is this a scheduled program? If so, you can use the program alert function to automatically tune to the channel at a time you designate.

Yes and no.

For the most part, NPR normally airs shows like this on Saturday and Sunday on two different time slots and on different stream numbers in the day. To do the same thing using the program alert feature, I would have to set up 4 different program alerts to be assured of catching one show, as opposed to one song or artist search to do the same. That’s fine as long as NPR and Sirius airs the show in its designated slots and nothing changes, but this isn't always the case. As you know, programming is moved around from its normal schedule to make way for special events and sporting events. This is the reality of having limited bandwidth and trying to accommodate many tastes for not just music, but sports and talk shows.

My gripe here is that I am losing a feature I had with my old units by upgrading to the new unit(s) that have an artist search feature. Maybe I should rephrase that to say that my gripe is, by introducing the artists search feature, a shortcoming was exposed in the information stream being broadcast on Sirius' talk channels. Its a specialized series of circumstances that have to be tried in order for this to be a problem, and I expect it to only be a problem for a scant few people....unfortunately, I'm one.

To compensate for that loss, I can use programming alerts, and it does work to a point. In my case, I'll need 4 program alerts instead of one song or artist search to get the same effect. (as long as nothing changes time wise.) The ideal situation would be if Sirius would change the formatting of their information streams broadcast on the talk channels so that it would be consistent with their music channels. If that happens, then this problem goes away. Thanks for the suggestion though as it is a temporary fix to the problem. I'll just have to use my old PNP2 by the computer.
