Question Are Alpine head units software upgradable?

I know there are few threads on the Alpine not my problem, directed electronics is the problem, but I wanted to throw this out to the group to see if anybody can validate what the CR dude told me today.

I called Alpine and the CR gave me the same song and dance about they don't make the ALP-1 and directed electronics does... blah, blah, blah.. much like what has been said in past threads.

I asked the guy *if* in the future Alpine accepted it was their head units not allowing the full sirius display, was it possible Alpine would release a firmware update to their head units. The Alpine rep yes, their head units are upgradeable and in the past, Alpine has shipped CDs with updated software.

My question is has anybody every heard of this or was this guy blowing smoke up my backside....

PS. This isn't a JVC provides a better Sirius display (or I hope it won't be).. I own a JVC head unit (installed in my better half's car) and it is great, but JVC doesn't provide a wired remote control so I can retain my factory steering wheel controls in my truck. I know there is a IR repeater thing I can use, but I want to avoid that solution.

Thanks in advance,

Fergz99 will become famous soon enough

I don't think its smoke that they would release updates for their units, but I don't think that will change the displays.

JVC may make real nice looking displays in their head units but imo they don't have half the sound quality that Alpine does, and I don't watch my car stereo I listen to it, so I'm more interested in sound then the display. Thats why I use Alpine. I used to be a big Kenwood supporter, but Alpine just blows them away with sound.

It all depends on what is most important to you, best quality sound or best quality graphics. I'll take sound over jumping dolphins every day.

What I really want is my cake and eat it also. I want the Sirius display of the 2 line JVCs and the wired remote control of the Alpines and Pioneers.

I think a software could change the display from 16 to 36 symbols being displayed when using a Sirius tuner as an input. It is just a decoder that is software driven. If a few forum friends can verify the software updated and somehow prove to me this is an option, I will buy the 9857 or it's 07 version.

I also left out that the Alpine rep stated Directed Electronics is in the middle of making a new Sirius receiver that will work with their bluetooth cell phone module.
