Default Can we get the free InV with 6-mon subscription, but activate another receiver?

The terms are not very clear:

"A pre-paid subscription of at least six months, paid by credit card (which may be combined with SIRIUS prepaid card), must be activated for each free radio on an existing SIRIUS subscriber account."

So, it doesn't necessarily say that we need to activate the free radio. We just need AN activation.

Did anybody look into it?

I ask because I already bought a sirius receiver to give as a gift to my GF and I would already include her on my account. So, since I will include her anyway, why not get a free receiver anyway?

Does it make sense?

PS: Do we get also 1 month free and the howard keychain?

Thanks

You must activate the tuner they are sending you free. You can bet they will make note of the ESN and if that ESN isn't activated, you'll end up buying that tuner. This is how it has always worked in the past, so I doubt they've changed it.

The policy says that if we don't activate, Sirius will charge us for 6 months subscription. It doesn't say anything about charging for the receiver.

There are a lot of things that they don't say and you only find out about it after the fact. But the bottom line is that you must activate the tuner they send you, you can't just activate any tuner. They do keep up with the ESN that they send you. I can't speak to this specific promotion, but in the past they did indeed charge you for the cost of the tuner and I'd bet in this case they would too, but perhaps they'll be happy just getting 6 months of service instead. Again I think it must be on the tuner you are sent.

I would hope you could activate the radio they sent you, then a day or two later just transfer the subscription to the radio you want. There is no charge to transfer subscriptions between two radios and it takes about 2 minutes.

I don't see why Sirius would complain if you did this - since they still achieve their objective of increasing the # of subscriptions.

Then again, you may want to put more weight on the comments of the member with 15,000 posts over the newbie with just 6

Well you may could pull it off. I've only done one promotional setup with SIRIUS and I never tried any of this. Now I have done this with XM and it almost cost me big time. I subscribed a new promotional tuner and then swapped out. The next day I had a charge for the the cost of the tuner. I freaked and contacted them. They allowed me to resubcribe it and removed the charge. I am not sure how much SIRIUS really monitors this, but I'd be very, very careful. It seems to me if they are giving you tuner, they would know the ESN and monitor it to insure you follow through and do not cancel before the required subscription period. It just makes sense to me, especially considering my previous experience.

I think if you could just get a free tuner and do this, we'd see a bunch of SIRIUS tuner where subscribers are making money off tuners, while SIRIUS is actually taking a loss.

DAB - I see your point and agree there is a risk. But the subscription is paid in full for 6 months - why would Sirius care which radio it is actually assigned to? For example, if I get the InV, and it dies after 2 days - can Sirius really expect me not to assign the sub to another radio while the return and repair is taking place on the InV?

Back to the original question: I would suggest trying to get the Starmate Reply from Radio Shack (on sale for $60 - $30 Radio Shack rebate - $30 Sirius rebate - FREE.) The terms of that rebate is you must subscribe for only 60 days and the Starmate Reply is a much better radio than the InV. At least the wait time before you switch the sub to the other radio is shorter.

Let me save Millertv some time and put up another of his obligatory - "Do Not Buy a Starmate" post.

Wink

I bought my wife a Sportster Replay and my mom an InV for X-Mas. I bought my wifes unit at the end of October and my mother's unit the second week of December under the free radio deal. The fine print says that if you do not activate the unit within a certain time, Sirius reserves the right to try to activate it under the credit card you purchased the units with even though according to the promotion you had until December 31, 2006 to activate the units. Needless to say, Sirius activated my wifes radio on December 26th, and my mom's radio on December 28th. They charged my card for the activation fee $15 per unit + 6 months of subscription at the $6.99 rate for both units. I think if they are unsuccessful in charging your credit card or if you don't eventually activate the unit they will charge you the radio price. Also with our subscriptions I think you can add up to 3 additional subscriptions for the $6.99 mo fee to your account. If you want to add a 4th radio then it is back to $12.95 per mo for number 4. I hope this helps. It pays to read the fine print.
