Default Sportster Replay vs Sportster 4

Which is better?

The upgrades to the S4, while nice, are not something that is essential to me. What is, is the sound quality. Seems to be a lot of issues with the S4, does the replay have these same issues. I plan on buying my first sat radio and the S4 is the newer model so it makes sense to go with that, but the difference between that and the Replay are so little I really could go with either. If the sound quality is actually better on the Replay I'd prefer that. Any advice?

Jayne, first off, welcome here to Sirius BackStage. We are here to help, but please do not post the same question in more than one forum. We will find your question and answer it appropriately.

The Sportster 4 is the newer unit. It runs cooler and is smaller than the Sportster Replay. However, the Sportster 4 will have a weaker FM transmitter due to the FCC.

The Sporster 4 also uses the new universal dock, which can be used by four ither Sirius radios.

The sound quality depends on how you hook up your Sirius radio to yoru car or hoe radio.

The Sportster 4 is quite a bit more compact. This might make it easier for you to install if dash space is at a premium.

Both the Replay and the S4 are 4 1/2 inches wide..

The Replay is 3 inches high. The S4 is 2 1/2 inches high.

The Replay is 1 1/8 inches deep. The S4 is 6/10 of an inch deep.

The Sporster 4 cradle is a little more compact than the Replay cradle.

The sound quality of all Sirius radios are the same.. As Michigan Made points out.. It depends on how you hook them up.

Sorry my bad. I post a lot of questions on fantasy football forums(hence the need for Sirius haha) and find different people view different catergories so I get a variety of answers which is helpful. I didn't realize you viewed all catergories here. Again sorry my bad.

Here is my specific situation. My wife works for a retailer here in Canada and as such gets a nice discount on items she purchases from her store. She picked me up the Replay for Christmas. (No sportster in stock)I have done a little research over the past 24 hours and just trying to figure out what is best for me. I guess just to clarify the answer you provided. Does the Replay in fact have a stronger FM transmitter than the S4? As I mentiond I think the S4 has some great features and it is much cooler looking. But listening quality is what is most important to me. I'd hate to have to pay more for the unit itself for extras that don't really interest me and than have to pay more again for a custom install.(Not a tech guy here).

Anyway long story short just trying to make the best choice for me. So my question is does the replay have a stronger transmitter than the S4? I appreciate your help and sorry again for the triple posting. Eager to make the choice for me and get my subscription started up haha.

The old Sportster Replays have mostly been reconfigured so that the FM modulators are about as weak, if not weaker, than the new Sporster4. Don't make your decision on this basis. If you don't live in a major city, you could likely survive using the either FM modulator, but will have to change channels as you drive into range of other radio stations. Depending on your car, buy either radio and hook the radio up using a FM direct connection. All you have to do is be able to unplug the antenna wire from the back of your radio, plug it into the the FM direct connection, and plug that back into your radio. It will sound very nice, believe me...

sportster replay has autodim and sportster 4 does not. I love that feature and that is what has kept me away form the 4.

Those are just the radio dimensions.. The Sportster 4 dock is a bit smaller, but I don't have those dimensions handy.
