Default DAB! New Car/ replace OEM/Help

Hi Dab

I have been following your posts for some time....just bought a new 2007 Ford Explorer....oem sirius radio YUCK

I have had an alpine 9857 in my other car w/ IPOD....

Read your JVC review...and I am most interested because of the no limitation on text....here is my question

Do I need to make absolutely sure that my installer uses the JVC antenna with the JCV unit I purchase? I am worried that they will try to use the Sirius antenna already in the unit (OEM Ford sirius radio)..should this be a concern?

Also, if I get the bigger JVC (bigger screen, I mean) will that provide more info at one time - from Sirius...or just bigger fonts

Thanks so much....this weekend I am stuck driving 1000 mile round trip with the awful OEM radio...at least it's sirius! - when I get back....straight to the installer I go!

Hi CM

I doubt the OEM antenna will work unless they have an adapter for it, but if it does, then it would probably work well with the JVC tuner. When you say bigger JVC, I assume you mean like a slide out screen or you talking about the single din AVX? The text is pretty large on the AVX. I have always felt all these guys waste space on their displays. But JVC by far does the best job.

Keep us posted on what you do. By the way you know Alpine is coming out with a new setup with the PNP adapater that looks pretty sweet. No word yet as to weather they fixed the text limitation yet.

Thanks DAB....

I think when I said antenna, I meant the tuner....the place I want to go to for the install is offereing Kenwood and Pioneer, they will get JVC if that's what I want, but they don't usually offer them...just wanting to clarify,

most brands put a text limitation on the Sat text of the HU....I know that IPOD, cd text is unlimited (at least in Alpine) but not Sat text....the only way I guess to be sure before I buy is to either see a demo of the unit in sat mode at the shop, (which most places don't offer) or call the manufacturer and hope whoever answers the phone knows what they are talking about.

unless of course you can enlighten my thinking......

Thanks for your time,
CM

The good news is that you can fit a double din head unit into your Explorer.

You could go with a Sirius-ready dvd player. JVC, Kenwood and Panasonic all make models that are reasonably priced.

The JVC is one that I personally own and recommend mainly because it doesn't have the limited text issue. I know that the Alpine and Pioneer both had this limited text issue where it cuts off the song title and artist at 16 characters. Now some have reported recently that the later 2006 model Pioneers with the PNR2 Sirius Connect tuners didn't have the 16 character limit. But that was something I read and I can't confirm it. I know the JVC has no such limit. The Alpine had this limit I know up through the 2006 year model. Panasonic I don't think has the text character limit.

Many have tried to say the limit wasn't the head unit but was the SIRIUS connect tuner but I have proved that information wrong by some internal testing I've done. Not to mention that at one time we had an Alpine Sirius Connect tuner feeding our what's playing list and it has no text limit. So we know it is a head unit issue.

Alpine has some nice stuff coming out in 2007. But you'll be able to get some good marked down 2006 equipment too, which is what I'd lean towards. But of course it all depends on how brand loyal you are.

Thanks again Dab, - and MachineHead

I've learned not to be loyal to any brand....which is why I say "p shaw" to anyone who looks down on JVC just because it's the prevailing opinion of some audio enthusiasts....I have been around a long time, and remember my first cassette deck in my truck, some 22 years ago (it was a kenwood), I was high on the hog with that unit....things have certainly changed....

I have just read recent posts re Alpine and Pioneer....having had two sat units in my previous car....text does matter, quite a bit...also intriguing to me is the various colors of display JVC offers....

The next "BIG" thing for me is IPOD interface....I will probably never play cds in my new Explorer...however, getting a dvd unit seems cool as I have many DVD Audio discs and various dvd concerts I would just love to listen to while I'm driving...however, I am concerned that I will have to park to put a dvd in...I read where you said "ground the wire"...so as to simulate park mode...I will not be installing all of this (need speakers, amp, and sub too).....do you think I can sweet talk the install shop...to do this for me? (ok, I am female, and can be quite charming )

Alright, I am rambling now....but I don't want to make a mistake....this is by no means my first big car audio purchase, and I have made mistakes before by just assuming the install guys know what they are doing, or selling me....

It's so hard to find a honest, professional, non snobby install shop, who actually understand that women love audio too!

Thanks for all of your advice, and great posts throughout the forum, they have been very helpful....I am still undecided, will check out more units and talk to my new favorite shop....

i have a 2005 ford f150 and have the same dash opening as your explorer. i used the jvc ar870. it looks good in the dash and sounds good too. the jvc sirius tuner didnt work so good for me. the signal would drop very easy, which was annoying. i exchanged the jvc sirius tuner thinking that i had a defective tuner, but i got the same results. i now have the jvc ar870 and the stiletto hardwired into the back of the jvc radio. it sounds great, and i get 0 drop outs. the jvc's are a good setup, if you dont mind a few drop outs here and there. here is a video of the radio, click on it to play.

Wow,

Thanks one028!

That was very cool of you to put a video up for me....I do like the JVC's...am concerned about the tuner drop outs...and was thinking of getting something that would allow me to plug and play a sportster replay...having rewind sounds cool...if you or anyone has recommendation for the following priorities

1. Sirius no text limit display (or at least more than 16 characters)
2. Ipod interface - must be user friendly
3. Dvd in dash player- that supports DVD Audio - _double din preferred
4. Dual Zone
5. also video aux input...to play pocket dish to kids in the back

Probably no "winner" solution....maybe a 7 inch widescreen in dash dvd player that allows plug and play for sportster 4...

I don't know.....any comments welcome...

If you do a plug a play, just make sure the head unit you buy has an aux input on it. I wanted a nice clean install which is why I went with a sirius connect unit rather than a PnP.

Yes,

I am starting to think pnp is too much clutter......

Kenwood Excelon will have some new units here in a couple of months....looks promising....haven't seen the sat radio screens yet.....

I am intrigued with the Pioneer AVH 7800 dvd...the ipod and sat screens look good, coupled with the features of the tuner (artist seek, game alert)...that could be a winner.

I am holding off on JVC because it is not a touchscreen...and tuner dropouts

Thanks for your comments

That's why I went with the Panasonic model over JVC. Also they're supposed to add a navigation unit sometime this year.

Well touchscreens are nice, but boy do they get filthy. I've actually changed my mind about them since having one in the past.

Right now though if I were looking for a new setup, I'd again have to wait and see exactly what Alpine does. They seem to have the very best iPod adapter setup. If they get the Sat Radio thing ironed out they will be hard to beat. I am keeping my eye out to see any reviews and or reports on Alpine as they roll them out.

Thanks DAB!

I too am waiting for new models from Kenwood, Apline...and I just noticed that JVC has another one coming that is touchscreen!...I think that is a concern regarding the "dirty" factor....I did like the Pioneer 7800 ipod screen..

DAB, does JVC have more "tuner dropouts" than other manufacturers? So far my experience with Alpine, Kenwood (for the two weeks it worked) and even the FORD OEM radio have had very few "acquiring signal" screens...maybe it's just my location that is good (Sacramento CA)

I want to put JVC in my top picks as I narrow down the HU's....just read a thing or two about dropouts, and didn't know how seriously to take it.

Thanks,
CM

I was one of the first on the forum to get the JVC1 Sirius Connect Tuner, then I was followed by several others, so I hope they will chime in. I honestly do not believe the JVC1 tuner has any more drop-outs than the other Sirius Connect tuners. I never really had much in the way of problems with drop-outs myself.

However, I have to say that when comparing the Stiletto with the JVC1 I did notice that in areas where I always expected and got drop-outs that Stiletto seemed to do a bit better job. Rather this is an improved antenna, improved reception with the tuner, I can't really say. Clearly these newer PNP's have a newer chipset too, so this may have something to do with it.

I do have friends that have Pioneer's, Kenwood's and even Alpine's. I've traveled with them many times and I can say without a doubt that my JVC never drop-out anymore than theirs did. No offense to One028, but my experience and his do not mirror each other at all. I was more than pleased with my JVC1. I did switch to the Stiletto when it came out, but only because I wanted to get my subscriptions down to 1 and use a single tuner. I was banging on 4 subscriptions and it just made no sense to me anymore, especially since I use a company van all week long and never even get in my vehicle. I just wanted to explain why I switched so you didn't think I had done so because of reception issues.

That's good to know....I was curious why you switched...I can't wait to check out the new JVC....my install guy persuaded me not to buy anything now, as newer models for all are about to arrive.....although, as you said, it is a good time to get last years stuff on the cheap.
