Default Xact Transmitter

If/when you ever take the XACT apart (it is very easy), becareful because the transmitter for fm is a wire that they soldered behind the "metal box". It is a solder joint that will take very little abuse--like when you take the cover off your are risking pulling it loose. I suggest cutting it immediately so it doesn't pull out! Cut it so you can have slack to re-connect it. When mine came loose I had to really look where it came from! I found a solder glob off center and under strong glasses you can see where the solder was disturbed. I have not tried this, because like you say, this transmitter is STRONG!!-but if you somehow put a mini-jack in the back of the radio from this wire you could plug a longer transmitter wire to the outside world! My Sportster Replay won't even pick up next to any radio-I plug audio out into other devices to get Sirius. If I run into any more extra XACT XTR1's that are cheap and fire up past the dog logo, I will let this forum know, in case some wants to go down this path to keep their old subscriptions going.

For what is worth...

After a year and a half, my Xact is experiencing "signs" of a slow and perhaps inevitable death. It is going through the shut offs and ons that you guys have described. But every now and then, after the 1000th time of manually shutting the unit off and on, it remains on and actually picks up signal! The thing then becomes an issue of once the unit gets hot, one cannot change channels. If you do, the unit broadcast zero sound. And if you shut the unit off, you'll be back on square one with the shut ons and offs.

I took it to my very reliable Mr.-fix-any-type-of-electronic-devise and he told me that the problem is not "electronic" but one of a computer ship that for some reason is stuck in some sort of loop.

I check around my way and Sirius units are available for about $50. Other than the S50 or the Stilleto which unit would you guys recommend? Keeping in my that the thing I love about my Xact, which is the main reason it's difficult to part ways with it, is the built in FM transmitter. that thing is so powerful I can pick up its signal on my car for a whole block.

Just a quick insight here, try a new AC adapter. Yes AC adapters do go bad, their basically mini power supplies like the ones sitting in your computer. Take home voltage and reducing it to a usable voltage by the hardware it is powering.

If you ever had a power supply in a PC go bad, you will know, it has very similar symptoms. You computer may boot up and shut off midway through bootup, or work fine for a few hours and randomly turn off.

I think a found a solution to the on and off problem with the Xact!!!

The culprit appears to be the extreme heat the unit gives off. The heat is generated by two long aluminum "bars" that reside behind the circuit board of the unit. These long aluminum bars cover, and maybe host, a number of microchips. Except for five screws that keep the two bars attached to the circuit board, both; chips and the "bars" are permanently soldered on to the circuit board. Here's what appears to have worked - remove the screws and gently - very gently! try to create a gap between the two bars. The purpose IS NOT to pry them apart, for if you try too hard YOU WILL PERMANENTLY BREAK AND DAMAGE THE UNIT. The purpose is to VENT the microchips inside the unit, in particular the chips inside the two bars... Do not put the screws back on the unit.

Hope this helps

Sorry to hear that your Xact is failing. I originally bought the XTR1 for the portability as well. Even before the death of my XTR1, I went with the Stiletto for its portable use. I know it is more expensive but, it provides the portability even better than the XTR1 ever did. I like being able to store my songs on the unit and using it for the MP3 capabilities.

As for the FM Transmitter, thanks to the FCC, we'll probably never see a strong transmitter again. The Stiletto does not have a built-in transmitter, it's stored within the docking units and even then they've crippled. I have had good success with the FM wire extension plugged into the FM Out of the Car dock. I know that many people prefer a wired FM solution, but the wire, which I picked up on ebay for about $10 really did the trick for me. (Keep your car antenna down if you do use this solution).

Thanks for the sympathy... But I am happy to report that my Xact has a new lease on life! The shut on and off problem has been resolved!

Default New Display

I think I now understand the new menu: the older radios do not display the new Canadian stations, weather, etc., I think they are 18X to 19X.Probably a newer chipset issue.By the way, the XACT XTR1 with the metal cover removed has worked flawlessly without the on/off plague.

That's what I figured. Had to be something with a different chip.
