Unhappy R.I.P. My Xact XTR1

This morning when my alarm clock went off, instead of hearing the opening music of the Howard Stern Show, I'm hearing silence from my radio. From the other room, I hear the startup beat of my XTR1 repeating itself about every 30 seconds.

I spring from my bed to see what's wrong to find my radio powering up, displaying the Sirius logo, then shutting down and repeating the startup process. I tried pulling it off the docking station and let it fully power down for a few minutes while I powered up my Stiletto and connected it to my network and stereo. But, my poor XTR1 just continued to go through its death throes every time I connect it to power.

So, is my XTR1 dead? Is there any hope? I tried looking for a reset button, but couldn't find one (I could have sworn there was one). Is there anyway to reset the unit or should I just put it out of it's misery?

I know it's not worth repairing, it would cost me more than getting a new radio. But right now it looks like it's a goner.

my Sanyo unit did the same thing. I was told it was something wrong with the chip inside and to trash it.

Default Xact_fix

I posted back in 11/2006 about fixing the xact xtr1. At the time I did not have the extra radio to see if it would work. IT DOES!!! Just make sure that your new radio you just bought-fires up! That is-it doesn't show the dog and keeps going on and off.

I found an XACT XTR1 at the Goodwill store in brand new, never opened condition. I payed 29.99 for it and here is what I did:
1. Took it apart
2.separate all the pieces from the board, leaving the metal box section
3.Go to Radio Shack, get some braided solder remover
4.Remove the solder from those pads that the "legs" are soldered too.Too much heat will cause those pads to come off.Not good, but is fixable.
5.Unscrew the metal box from the board. When all the solder is removed this box will come off. If a pad goes with it you will have to connect a wire in its place. Some pads do not connect to anything---number 5 from left to right.
6.This metal box is now an extra paper weight!!
7.Now remove the metal box from your SUBSCRIBED radio in same fashion.
8.PUT MARKS ON EITHER YOUR OLD RADIO PARTS or THE NEW ONE!!! You do not want to forget which board you are swapping out!
9.Straighten out the pins on your SUBSCRIPTION box so they align exactly on to your new pads from your "new" board. Screw it to the new board.
10.You will need the tiniest solder wand you can find, with the tiniest solder and solder tip cleaner and a sponge that is damp.Tin the tip.
11.Go to Harbor Freight and get some magnified/lit visors for 6 bucks so you can see what you are doing.
12. Solder those legs on those pads. I used a dental tool pick to press on the legs as I soldered.
13. Put back together and wait for your subscription to update.

This is a lot easier than soldering those pins at the bottom where it connects to the base. Those pins are too small to touch with any solder tip I could find.
Good luck to you.

Unhappy

Che, thanks for that information, I'm sure that it would work.

However, since I don't have a lifetime sub, I'm not sure why I would go to all that trouble when I could just transfer the subscription to the new unit.

Default Quicker Fix

You get three transfers. I have one left! If you do run across another xact xtr1 that fires up, instead of all the solder trouble, I have been told that a glue that has silver in it for pcb repair like SILVER PRINT will glue those pins down without tedious soldering. Just make sure those springy pins lay down nice on the pads and use a toothpick to apply the glue. You still need a pair of magnifying glasses to see well. Wait for Sirius to have another sale on radios and then at the end of your subscription new subscription transfer your old subscribtion to it. Remember that Sirius has a year warranty on their radios and the makers only have 6 months. Good luck!!

My first XRT1 died and I had all the add-ons for it (Boombox, Pod, Car Kit) so I was bummed. I sought one out and found one at target on clearance... that one is still running and I use it around the house...

but now I have a Stiletto, so I just added a sub... when the XRT1 dies again I'm not sure what I'll do

I picked up an extra one on super clearance at target for like $10 awhile back just to avoid your problem. I have a Box, a home dock and a pod all depending on that receiver. And I've had one die before so I like knowing I have this spare in the closet ready to go if my current one dies as well.

That's always a good idea. I'm surprised that there are some XTR1s still around working allright. I had one and it was my first radio. It died in a matter of months. I just as well got a new radio.

Default xact cooling

I do my best to leave these things alone!!!Just leave them in the cradle and pull the outputs from the cradle---unsnapping them from the cradle as I have seen, pulls those solder joints from the tiny pads.I think I would glue it to the base.A small computer fan siliconed to the back vents wouldn't hurt either.Or if you really want to cool this Sirius "puppy" you can take it all apart and when you are looking at the metal box remove the 5 philip screws and carefully take the cover off by sliding a thin knife around the edges. It may seem like those pins are stopping it from coming off but it is only because a circuit board is sandwiched between the two metal parts and they put some grey double sided tape under the metal cover. Lots of things come to play here and maybe if you are familiar with cooling cpu's you can add to this. That paste you smear on cpu's for heat removal could be used here, but you will have to add something metal to make up the difference of that tape membrane and then use the screws to clamp it tightly on the chip.Or cut the plastic back so you can put a small fan right on the metal.Or Dremel a hole below those "ribs" and put the fan over the hole to get the heat off. I am curious to know if a stock XACT with a better heat sink over that chip will make it work longer.Sorry to stammer on this subject, but having your radio go out is crappy and buying another one make one gun shy.

I got mine xtr 1 when they went on clearance at Target. It has worked just fine. I treat it very rough, and have no problems. Hope it last. The one thing I do is to turn the display brightness to the lowest setting, helps to keep it cool. Also, I try to turn off the fm transmitter it I am not using it. The device will still get hot, but I hope this will make it last longer.

Another issue is the category list. It never updated when the new catagories were added. For example, when Stern got his new category on my sportster 4, my xtr1 updated but never displayed the new categories. Do any of your xtr1's update. This is not a problem, but it would be nice.

Default xtr1 update

When I switched that metal box out as explained in previous posts, for a second or two all I got was the channel that you get before activation. Then I got all channels and then it updated all channels. This radio had not been turmed on since november. My catagories have Howard at 100-101 in the Entertainment catagory. Hope this helps.

Default Xact Fix Update

A friend of mine has an XRT1 purchased after mine, about 2 years old. He experienced the off and on scenario and was not able to find another to swap out the metal box. He inspected all the solder pads under a magnifying glass and found no suspect areas. He decided to take off the lid of the metal box and try it. IT WORKED!!! But when he put it back together it went back to off/on mode!!! His suspicion was the box is touching something and placed a chunk of that foam tape between the bottom metal and the pcb to lift it from the metal and screwed just 2 screws back in, just to hold it from shifting. Its worked for 2 days!!! TRY THAT BEFORE MY MAJOR SURGERY!!!!

I had my Xact1 working for two years before I replaced it with the S50. What a mistake. The s50 broke down in a matter of hours of airplay while my Xact still works. The only reason I upgraded was that my wife was getting tired of looking at it saying I needed to upgrade. Lo and behold I upgrade to a problematic radio. Got my replacement but the Xact was a work horse in those two years. My friend even wants to buy it from me.

Hey Che!
Thanks for the info. I guess these units don't have the ability to display the newer menus. My sportster 4 is so nice, but I would not give up my xtr1 just yet, cuz the transmitter on these xact units are sooo awesome. I may have to try that surgery thing with my visor. Sounds like fun. No anyone who has done that swap with a visor?
