Nov 28: LOUISIANA

As President Bush said in his address from Jackson Square, there is no way to imagine America without New Orleans. It is the soul of America. This great city will rise again. It will be a rebirth, a chance to build better than before. It will take all of us - the multicultural gumbo that defines us - working together to make it happen. We will be reborn, better than before.

By DAB

Earlier this year as most of you know LA was hit by two hurricanes. The first Katrina ripped away at the foundation of our state. Our beloved New Orleans, lost, but not gone, she will be rebuilt. It will take a long time for New Orleans to be anything close to what she was, but our goal is to make her better.

Only weeks later we got struck with Rita and she destroyed much of the south east corner of the state. Many homes lost and lives totally shattered just like New Orleans and the Miss Gulf Coast. Louisiana will never be the same, but from what we've lost we will draw strength to carry on.

Default Louisiana, Come As You Are, Leave Different

[img=left:e62ec60507]http://www.cenlacdc.org/d/sunset.jpg[/img:e62ec60507]Ah, the deep River. The Mighty Mississippi. The defining river in the United States, that flows from the lakes of Minnesota down to the Delta of Louisiana. By the time it makes it to Louisiana, it’s filled with sediment as it continues to add land and make Louisiana bigger every year. All places along the river have adapted the river into their lifestyle. Riverboats, barges, yachts, and pretty much every type of watercraft with the exception of an aircraft carrier can cruise these waters. The Riverwalk, a tourist spot in New Orleans will allow good spots for you to relax along the river banks and view the many boats along it, like the Cajun Queen.

Get the heck off of Bourbon Street and take a cruise down LA-18 or LA-75. This Louisiana Highway hugs the Mississippi River east of Baton Rouge and west of New Orleans, and has several plantation homes. To know the south is to know our history, and with it was many plantation homes that were home to many of the crops of the 1800s.

If you are an avid gambler, or someone who enjoys seeing a nice show and dinner, Shreveport's Casino district is the place to be.

Alexandria and Pineville sit on opposite banks of the Red River in central Louisiana. This river brought people of many cultures to settle here. Its steady flow sustains us and ties us to our past. Our river is still a port of commerce, but also provides beauty and recreation. Whether you want to stroll through the Riverpark, fish the oxbows or ski down to the sandbars, it all happens on the Red. We also boast the state’s only National Forest – Kisatchie – filled with trails and streams as well as several scenic lakes, all providing a variety of outdoor activities in a setting only nature can provide.

In Lafayette, experience the cultural traditions of the Cajuns and Creoles, as well as the contemporary sophistication of a modern city in the heart of French Louisiana. Lafayette, Louisiana is the ideal hub for the many South Louisiana communities that represent the Cajun, Creole and antebellum lifestyles of the Deep South.

Louisiana, Come as You Are. Leave Different.

There are several of us from Louisiana on the forum, but even if you aren't from Louisiana. Post something about trips maybe you've taken to La. I'd love to read your stories. WELCOME TO LOUISIANA!

I would like to say it's AMAZING to see the wonderful resolve of the people of this great state, after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. People like DAB and others came together through the goodness of their hearts to help the victims of these tragedies.

I have no doubt that Louisiana's greatest city, New Orleans, will be better than ever once it's rebuilt.

Default The Great State of Louisiana

I lived my whole life in the New Orleans Metro area until that fateful August 29th.

The atrocities that occured both during and after Hurricane Katrina are very disheartening, there is no city quite like the Crescent City.

I sincerely hope that she can return to a shadow of what she once was, I know that the will of the people is there. I have relocated my family to southwest Virginia, but Louisiana will always be home to me. It's funny this entire situation has made me appreciate my sirius even more, because I will never miss an LSU or Saints game again.

The City will rise again and the people with it, you can beat us up, but you will never keep us down. As long as The Meters play Tipitina's and you can buy a Guiness at O'flaherty's New Orleans will live on.

Well firstwaver, let me first welcome you aboard SBS. And secondly, welcome to SW VA. Great place to be in lieu of not being able to live down in Nawlins, but of course I may be a bit biased.

My wife and I went down to the famous Crescent City for our belated honeymoon a couple years ago. Stayed in a cool hotel in the warehouse district that was an old coffee place. Very nice. Was a quick walk to the Quarter and the river. Did all the cool touresty things.. get drunk on Bourbon St., go to the aquarium (which was VERY kickass), the DDay museum (also very cool). We generally just loved strolling around the city. It definitely is a unique atmosphere.

Default Thanks Joker

Thanks Joker,

The people of VA have been awesome to my family and I, we have no complaints about the Roanoke Valley. My only complaint, is because our birth certificates got lost in the hurricane, we have to drive to Richmond to get our driver's license's

I saw the most snow I have ever seen in the last week, but I guess thats what you get for living in a subtropical cllimate. I'm 36 and it snowed twice in my life in southeast Louisiana, lol.

Thanks for the welcome, Ill be around

Wow, I almost missed Louisiana's day here. Thanks to all who have given support during the tough months we have been through. I did not experience the losses that some of my family members from New Orleans and other fellow Louisianians did and I am extremely thankful.

I have lived in Lafayette, LA for my whole 25 year life and it has been just great. The friendly people you find everywhere and, of course, the great food really makes this place special.

And how 'bout that Ragin Cajun football team! This year was the first winning season since 1995!! Woohoo!

I totally LOVE Lafayette. It is one of my favorite places to visit. I actually go there a lot of the weekends. Since I am in Alexandria, it takes me a little over an hour to get there. Great places to eat, friendly people and a lot of places to shop that we don't have in Alexandria.

In fact I am planning to there on Saturday to do some Christmas Shopping and to meet some friends there.

Yeah, Hurricane preparation is one everyone's mind. The worst that could happen is another year like 2005.
Let's make a pact to close our borders and keep all hurricanes out!
Where I'm at, we were really affected by the hurricanes last year, but we were fortunately spared the worst (no flood waters).

I've lived in Louisiana my entire life and hope to remain here.

Default New Orleanian here

I thought I'd post in here to say that I'm a New Orleanian as well and have been living back here at home since early December. I've had XM since 2002, but the reason I got Sirius was that I was doing a lot of driving during my 3 month evacuation period and wanted to be able to listen to LSU, the Saints and the Hornets all of which Sirius has.

I've kept it through the non-football season because I totally love BBC 1.

to Sirius Backstage. Sirius is a great way to hear all the Louisiana sports teams you mentioned.

I'm from Lafourche Parish.
Check out this thread -- the picture of Tiger Stadium I posted will get you ready for some LSU football.

I have been quite happy with Sirius so far and listen to it every day. I just bought the Starmate Replay, but haven't had time to hook it up yet. I'm quite looking forward to seeing what that one has to offer.

By the way, I've been an LSU football season ticket holder my whole life, so I am completely with you on that front.
