Default SIRIUS Backstage needs to change.

I've been a subscriber for a little less than a year, and a Sirius
Backstage member longer than that just to get support for
installation, where I got a lot of friendly advice from various
posters about how I should go about this. While it took me a little
longer than expected to get installation, I finally got it.

Being an administrator of a slowly dying site, I knew what it was like
to... administrate. I knew it was a lot tougher than I thought but I
learned real fast, like riding a bike. I see now as Sirius Backstage
may mirror the Free Resellers forum if nothing happens. I see now that
the admins have forgotten to ride their bike.

When I first got to Sirius Backstage forums, there were chats,
contests, the SIRIUS news I liked to check everyday rather than
Orbitcast or SSG, and the eclectic team of moderators I once knew that
were on the board. The admins even came on a lot.

But it's all gone.

Now Sirius Backstage doesn't have a chat. It doesn't have contests. It
doesn't have news. And there are only 2 or 3 moderators, and none of
the admins are on anymore.

We need to change around a lot of stuff or we're going to find this
bulletin board slowly die.

---

What’s the plan?
Action! PM and E-mail the administrators, tell them you want a better Backstage. You want what it used to be. If they can’t do this, then they need to hand their duties to a folks more willing. If you like the way things are, remember, with no support things are bound to get worse.

You can also add your thoughts by replying to this thread.

Real, that was a very nicely stated post.

I remember 2 years ago when I joined, Backstage had about 6,000 or so members compared to the 25,000 now but it actually thrived more back then. It used to be a great place for helping, learning and just talking. It used to be unique ideas (commercial unveilings, product unveilings, contests, and other things). Admins contributed to making this the BEST forum out there. Granted, Sirius used to help out, but still this place can be so much more.

It's unfortunate that the admins seem not to care anymore, when I was a mod I remember we'd have to wait a really long time for our ideas to get some ground. And sometimes, they'd just be ignored and forgotten.

2 or 3 moderators can NOT handle all of this, and it is completely unfair to ask them to do so. Part of the reason less mods are participating is because of the lack of interest from the admins. When you post an idea and it goes unanswered, and if it does it’s forgotten. When you want to do something but it takes forever to get going, it’s disheartening.

I would hope that the current administration could make this place what it once was, but if they can't, like you said perhaps they just need to hand it down to parties more willing.

This place is running by itself, and like you stated real that can only lead to disaster. Fortunately for Backstage, the members are the best there is, and they will help out for as long as they can.

Admin input is great but whenever I have a question I find that the users on here are pretty damn bright and usually can answer whatever I need. Then again, I wasn't here 2 years ago so I have no frame of reference.

You are very correct, the members here are the smartest and best there is. Admins don't really have to offer support in that way if you have a forum such as this. It's the other things that real and I pointed out that admins need to support.

I agree, I love this board as much as anybody, and want to see it thrive. We do have a great bunch of members here, and I love helping out the others as much as people have helped me in the past. But yes, some issues don't seem to get much attention. I know it may be beating a dead horse, but we still have yet to get our "dog paws" back after the board update. I do remember one of the mod's saying that they will be back, so I guess it's wait and see. I'm as patient as anyone, if not more, so I can wait. But it does bring up just one point as an example.

I do find that as a past and future XM subscriber, that this forum is more palatable for subscribers of the other service than most XM forums. 411 is the best of the two, just stay away from the stock forum.

Plus you generally don't see the XM hating here like you see the Sirius/iPod/Anything not XM bashing on the XM forums.

I was wondering what was going on, and still am for that matter. for the past 4 years things were much different. It is not bad now but it seems clear we the posters are just keeping things going. This will only last so long before things start to fall apart. Where is Jeff? I can not believe after all he has done to build this site that he would walk away.

What can we, the users of SBS, do about it? We can't force the Admins to maintain and update this site. All we can do in that regard is hope they come around and get back into the site.

People have tried starting new sites, like SiriusFanNetwork, but those efforts tend to fail fairly quickly because SBS has so much momentum remaining from its past greatness. For a new site to have a chance there would need to be a groundswell of support including from many of the significant contributors to the SBS forums.

Why can't we as users just try to answer any questions asked? I see 100's of questions every day and some I think I can answer (and I do/try) and others I know the rest of you can answer better than I can so I don't respond. Mods/admins can't answer everything... but the community as a whole can. Mods/Admins are best served in keeping the peace but, seriously, many members on here know far more than any admin could ever know.

It's not about the Forums as much as the other parts of the site. The forum is self-sustaining for now, though over time people will be more and more bothered by the state of the site and participate less and less. The "news" stories on the home page are nearly a month old and updates were only coming about once a week before that. Half of the buttons along the header of the page (seek, chat, get, help, and play) are not at all functional and have not been for a long time. Others lead to outdated pages. Given the lack of involvement of people in charge the site will continue to spiral down with less and less functionality. If the forum broke who would fix it?

Shit, whoever runs Satellite Standard could just send over headlines for the main page- it's not that hard. And it's possible that the new layout is just a midway deal and maybe it's part of ideas that just haven't been finished yet. I'm sure if we all donated $20 today, Jeff would work his ass off to make this a perfect site.... but, how many of you have donated?

Here's a page that illustrates the slow death of Sirius Backstage with real numbers:

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...sbackstage.com

It's overall share of internet traffic is off about 70% since January. January is naturally a high point (Howard Stern), but it has been on a constant downward trend since then with no sign of slowing down or turing around.

Jeff doesn't need donations, he gets money from advertisers (aka the banners you see at the top and bottom of the pages) and shop sirius.

The thing is there are people here who are willing to run (or atleast help) without the need for extra money.
