Default US Satellite Radio receivers won't be locked down

Wonder if sirius plans to do the same thing.

Satellite Radio receivers won't be locked down
Friday, 02 December 2005
Satellite radio just got a little cheaper in this country as XM Radio Canada has informed Digital Home Canada that it will activate satellite radio receivers purchased in the United States provided the listener resides in Canada.

The change in policy means that grey marketers will be able to convert to XM Radio Canada without having to buy new receivers, and more importantly it means that Canadians will have access to the same radios which are being sold in the United States.

A recent report by Digital Home Canada found the cost of Sirius and XM satellite radio receivers was 50% to 100% higher in Canada than the same receiver in the United States. The change now means Canadians traveling to the states this winter can pick up an identical receiver in the U.S. and activate it in this country or buy used equipment from sites such as eBay.

In November, the Globe and Mail first reported that XM and Sirius satellite radio receivers would be "locked" and would only play signals destined for the country they were sold in. This policy was still in effect as recently as last week when XM told Digital Home Canada that it would NOT activate receivers purchased in the United States.

After receiving information from DHC readers saying that XM Radio Canada would activate U.S. receivers, Digital Home Canada contacted the company and received this reply.

XM Radio Canada will not encourage the purchase of XM ready hardware from the U.S. market. We support Canadian retailer partners and encourage our listeners to purchase their radios in Canada. However, if a radio was purchased in the U.S., we will support the activation of the product on XM Canada provided the listener resides in Canada. This policy is in the best interest of customer service, and compliance of the XM product within the respective broadcast territory.

In late November, Digital Home Canada asked Sirius Canada if they would activate receivers purchased in the United States, however, the company did not reply. DHC readers, however, have informed us that the company is now activating Sirius receivers purchased outside this country.

They already have, there's no problem activating a US receiver with a Cdn sub. A bunch of my friends activated their old US receivers with a Cdn sub to give to family members that just wanted the Cdn service.
