Default Alberta: Static at traffic lights and lousy customer service

Hey all! I just signed up on this board and I’m getting all sorts of great information already!

I got satellite radio in July of this year. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, and I drive a Ford Escape. You must be wondering why the hell I’m telling you all this! It’s because I’m having huge problems with Sirius Canada and it could be one of, or a combination of, the above factors. Does anyone have this issue: static and interference at traffic lights? When I’m driving, and whether I’m stopped at, going through, or approaching a traffic light, my receiver emits some serious static. Any ideas?

Sirius Canada has been getting a series of e-mails from me since August and they haven’t even come close to finding a solution. So not only are they offering lousy sound quality, but equally crappy customer service.

What are some other comments on static at traffic lights, sound quality and customer service from Sirius Canada?

Thanks.

I recommend a Wired FM Modulator for your Ford Escape, which should help the static. I have no idea why but whenever the car is stopped my iPod transmitter would go into static mode then back to normal when I was going, which would be your problem. The Wired FM modulator would connect your radio to um, your radio and eliminate all static.

That's what I thought too. So in my original complaint I told them I'd be willing to try one of the modulators (for free, of course!!), and this is the reply I got about that: "Unfortunately, we are unable to send you a FM Modulator Relay. We do not have the equipment to ship out."

I don't think I should have to fork out another 30 or so bucks to have their product (which is supposed to work in a certain manner) work in the manner advertised!

Thanks for the idea though!

The product came with an option, wire it direct or use FM transmitter. Wire it direct if the FM is causing you static problems. It is FM...radio transmission, susceptible to interference etc...

Sorry but get over yourself and buy the wired module.

The product came with an option alright, but to enjoy the sound quality they advertise....you have to pay more?! Doesn't make much sense if you ask me.

For one, when you are stopped at a traffic light, your vehicle is going to be much closer to other vehicles around you. It's possible that if one or two of those vehicles is using a Wireless FM Transmitter that it is affecting the station you are listening to. A Wired FM Modulator Relay of FM Direct Adapter is a $20-$30 Fix. Well worth it to not have to continue to send emails to customer service.

Yeah, just like if you buy a $50 CD player you need a Stereo AND speakers to hear it...and if you buy a car you need GAS and TIRES and INSURANCE and a LICENSE....

God dammit and you are complaining about customer service? I can't IMAGINE why???? What product have you had GOOD customer service with???

As for your static, you are most likely getting this due to a higher concentration of FM broadcasts on the station you've chosen. Could be that 6 other people/cars/businesses at the intersection are all broadcasting on the same frequency.

I tried changing the frequency, I tried moving the antenna...nothing works. And it's not just happening when I'm stopped at a light (increasing the chance of picking up someone else's signal) it's when I go through lights that it happens too.

I guess I'm just getting sick of these corporations getting away with lies and not getting any information when I ask questions. And before I get a reply saying «what's the problem...you still get all the channels and the sound is coming out», the point is that for this receiver to get the sound quality Sirius rants and raves about...I need to spend the extra ducats to get it! I know it's only $30, that's not the point...it's the principle of the thing. Plus I really hate those form e-mails! hahaha!

Rustytrombone...if your CD player sounded like a tape player and your corvette sounded like a pinto...I'm pretty sure you'd be asking the manufacturers a few questions.

I hate to brake it to ya but the quality is horrendous regardless. Comparable to 96k or LOWER MP3 I thoroughly am disappointed when I put FM back on and hear how good it sounds. Both satellite providers have chose quantity over quality for use of there limited bandwidth.

I live in Edmonton and have not had any problems with static. Perhaps the problem isn't with Sirius but with the receiver itself. I'd contact the manufacturer.

You just making up nonsense now. There has never been any complaints like this ever. No one has ever had to buy additional parts for anything. No one ever has to buy extra parts.

Must be just you.

PS, the S50 is problem free and highly recommended for anyone that needs a live feed while visiting the Pyramids of Egypt.

I also live in Edmonton and listen to my Sirius radio via FM Modulator. I however, have no issues with the service at all. I do get the occasional dropout but it isn't common and I rarely have static. The only time I have any static is when a nearby vehicle has an FM tranmistter on the same frequency. This is starting to happen a little more often but it is still tolerable. However, this is not an issue with Sirius but with the proliferation of FM transmitters. I would bet that your issue is with your installation, or the receiver itself, and not a result of the service quality.

Having said that, this forum is full of complaints agains Sirius Canada regarding customer service and their use of form letters when responding to customer concerns. This is not new and is something they really need to work on.
